The Mavericks kicked off the weekend welcoming back 16 years worth of CMU Lady Ruggers. Friday night the team hosted a family dinner where traditions, memories and stories were shared. Over 30 Alumna made the trek back home for the first annual weekend. Part two of the weekend was cheering on the current team as they kicked off the season at home.
CMU welcomed New Mexico State University to the CMU rugby pitch where their hot streak kept rolling. The team started off the scoring with scrumhalf
Kaylee Burns picking and running off the edge of a ruck just 3 minutes into the matchup. Then Co-Captain Ellen Rickerd added to the lead 5 minutes later with a try and a conversion off of a nice run. Then things got interesting. NMSU made a hard line break and a big run down the pitch to answer back with a try and conversion of their own closing in on the CMU lead 12-7. That would be the only time the visiting team scored and the rest of the match was hard earned breakaways and runs by CMU.
Rookie freshmen Wing Kate Irsfeld got a nice offload on the outside and touched won on the outside. Then it was to the opposite side for Chole Coop to show her speed turning on the burners to run through the competition.
Kenya Contreras lowered a shoulder and ran through the defense to run the score to 27-7 at halftime. Despite the score NMSU was making CMU work for it.
With some halftime adjustments and a regroup, CMU came out swinging again, Co-Captain
Sage Davis was the first to find a gap in the second. Then it was Coop again with another breakaway run on the outside. Bentley Steyaert was the last Mav to score. With the time winding down and the NMSU bench depleted due to injury and lack of finishers, the match was called just in time for both teams to vacate the pitch before the storm hit. Lady Mavs earned a 44-7 victory as they continue on this undefeated season.
The Mavs will enjoy a long break going into a tough matchup against Colorado School of Mines in Golden Sept. 28th. Make sure to catch the match via LiveStream. Follow cmuwomensrugby for the latest updates!
