Mavericks stay undefeated

The Colorado Mesa University women's rugby team hit the road Friday for an early Saturday morning matchup against Division I competition, traveling to Logan, Utah, to take on Utah State University.

With a 9 a.m. kickoff and crisp, wet conditions creating a challenging environment, the Mavericks battled through the elements, penalties and knock-ons to earn valuable time together on the pitch and, most importantly, a hard-fought road victory to remain undefeated.

CMU wasted little time making their presence felt. Freshman Addison Schreuder, who earned Player of the Match honors, broke through a gap and powered down the field, barreling through the USU defense for the Mavs' opening try. Schreuder followed it up with a successful conversion to give CMU an early advantage.

The Mavs continued to apply pressure, as speedster Chloe Coop soon found daylight, breaking through for another CMU try. Schreuder once again converted, extending the Mavs' lead before Utah State answered with a score just before halftime.

CMU made several substitutions at the break, giving the entire traveling squad an opportunity to contribute and gain valuable minutes on the pitch. With fresh legs on the pitch, Navaya Steele was able to turn on the jets, breaking to the outside and racing in for another Mavs try.

This score provided CMU with some much-needed breathing room, but Utah State continued to battle and added another score late in the half. The Lady Mavs had enough left in the tank to withstand the late push and close out the road victory.

With another win secured, Colorado Mesa will return home for Alumnae Weekend, where the program will celebrate its 2026 National Championship and welcome Colorado School of Mines to campus for what promises to be one of the most anticipated matchups of the regular season.
