Two Mavs go 3-0 in Washburn Invitational

Payan, Hultman avoid playing for pool title in revamped bracket

Box Score

TOPEKA, Kan. — Playing your teammate in an open tournament is sometimes unavoidable, but the coaches who entered their teams in the Washburn Invitational agreed to alter those matchups this weekend.

Instead of Romain Payan and Emil Hultman playing for the Purple draw championship on Saturday, they entered into a draw with others in the same predicament. Henry Scheck, who reached the consolation final of his draw, was also moved into that restructured draw.

It paid off for the all three Colorado Mesa men's tennis players, who won their matches to wrap up a successful weekend.

Hultman, a senior from Sweden, rallied after dropping the first set against Yoshinobu Nakatsuji of Washburn to win 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 15-13. Payan, a redshirt sophomore from Paris, claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Washburn's Petr Leipner, and William Leschig, a senior from Germany, defeated Diogo Borges of Seward County Community College 4-0, 4-1 in a "fast four" match.

Senior Henry Scheck dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the Blue back draw championship match against Yuto Myagawa of Washburn, and sophomore Gavin Hutter lost 5-4 (10-8), 4-1 in the third-place match of the Orange draw. Sophomore Luke Burriesci lost his third round robin match in the Pink draw 6-1, 7-6 to Thiofhi Tshivhase of Pratt Community College to finish 2-1. Tshivhase went 3-0 to win the draw. Senior Diogo Manzano lost 4-2, 4-0 to Sam Dinneen of Pratt Community College in a consolation match in the Green draw.

Redshirt senior Jamison Pfingston was forced to default in the singles draw of the Yellow draw with a Friday injury, but came back Saturday to play doubles with Payan defeating a team from Northwest Missouri 8-6 in the round of 16.

Scheck and Leschig lost their doubles match 8-5 to Washburn, and Gavin Hutter and Burriesci fell 8-1 to Northwest Missouri in a consolation doubles match. Manzano and Hultman received a bye into the consolation quarterfinals, but all eight remaining teams elected not to continue.

The same was true of the main draw quarterfinals, with the teams electing not to play so they could start traveling home earlier.

All told, the Mavericks went 12-10 in singles matches, led by Payan and Hultman, who each went 3-0. Leschig and Burriesci each went 2-1. CMU finished 4-4 in doubles, with Pfingston and Payan winning both of their matches.

After a week off, the Mavericks will wrap up the fall schedule at the ITA Western Regional Championships from Sept. 25-27 in La Mirada, Calif., hosted by Biola University.
