GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team began play at their own Maverick Challenge event on Saturday (Apr. 12) afternoon at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa. Teams were greeted with warm temperatures and slightly breezy conditions which they have faced many times this season.
The Mavericks currently sit in second place out of three teams after first round play concluded. They shot a 20-over, 308 and are eight strokes behind leader Westminster after the round. The 308 is the third-best opening round score of the season for the Mavericks on the heels of their best opening round score of 302 at CSU Pueblo two weeks ago.
Senior
Cassidy Phelan and
Payton Panzeri were the Mavericks top golfer on the afternoon as both shot a respectable 3-over, 75 and are in a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard.
The Henderson, Nev. native Phelan, finished the round with five bogeys and two birdies. Her two birdies came on back-to-back holes on the par-4, No. 4 hole and the par-5, No. 6 hole while Panzeri played consistent with four bogeys and a birdie. Her birdie came on the short par-4 dog leg right, No. 14.
Hunter Gledhill and
Brittlynn O'Dell are in a tie for ninth place at 7-over, 79.
Mackenzie Goudreau, playing as an individual for the Mavericks, shot a first round 5-over, 77 and is tied for sixth.
Westminster's Ashley Lam is in the lead with a 1-under, 71 in the first round.
Tomorrow's second and final round is scheduled to begin at 9am.
