Shields claims third conference honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore goalie Shaden Shields was named as the Peach Belt Conference Rocky Mountain Division's Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, it was announced by Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference officials on Monday afternoon.
 
The Naples, Florida native earned the latest honor after making 13 saves in a key 8-7 divisional win over Concordia University Irvine in the Mavericks' home opener on Friday.  He also recorded three groundballs and faced 40 total shots.
 
Shields had also earned the same honor on Feb. 18 and Mar. 3.
 
The Mavericks extended their home field winning streak to 17 games since the start of the 2022 campaign with Friday's win and improved to 6-2 overall while extending their lead atop the Rocky Mountain Division standings with a 3-0 record.
 
Shields leads the division with his .569 save percentage and ranks second in both goals against average (9.16) and total saves (82).
 
The Mavs will continue their season this week with two games.  They will host winless Adams State (0-4; 0-4 PBC/RMD) on Thursday at 5 p.m. before playing in Salt Lake City against Westminster (4-4; 2-1 PBC/RMD) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
