PUEBLO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University track & field athletes combined for four event wins and a trio of NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks at Friday's Chuck Hearing Classic, here at CSU Pueblo's ThunderBowl. The Mavericks also registered a dozen new or improved marks on the program's all-time top-10 charts.
Augustine Hancock,
Antone Higgs and
Brooke Miller set the Mavs' NCAA marks while Hancock and Higgs were victorious.
Megan Hodges and
Garrett Searls also claimed victories with impressive personal bests while
Christina Palmer rounded out the Mavs' winners list as the Mavs took the top three spots in the women's discus throw.
Hancock, a returning NCAA qualifier and the school-record in the hammer throw recorded a mark of 53.48 meters (175 feet, 5 inches) in that event and now ranks 12
th on the season-long national performance list with that mark.
Meanwhile, Palmer led a Maverick trio in the discus throw, taking the victory with a season-best toss of 44.41 meters (145-8).
Kaiya Graves and
Kylie Mayer were right behind with throws of 43.28 meters (142-0) and 43.02 meters (141-2). Graves now ranks sixth in CMU history while Mayer is seventh. The Mavs also now have the second, third and fourth best marks in the RMAC this season.
Higgs, a NCAA qualifier during the indoor season, made his outdoor debut with a mark of 7.51 meters (24-7.75). He leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and ranks fourth nationally with that effort, which also puts him third in CMU history.
Miller, the Mavs' 800-meter record holder, turned in a time of 2:11.53 to place fourth in that event. With the altitude-conversion, Miller's time lowered to 2:10.83 and puts her ninth on the national list.
Hodges won the 1,500 meters in 4:39.36 and now ranks fifth in school history.
Meanwhile, Searls cleared 4.80 meters (15-9) in the pole vault, well more than a foot above his previous outdoor best and surged all the way to second in CMU history behind only former indoor national champion Nolan Ellis.
The Mavericks also combined for three other third place finishes throughout the day.
Freshman
Shirley Weaver recorded one of those in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running to a time of 11:46.40 in her debut to rank second in CMU history.
Autumn McCorkel also now ranks fifth after finishing sixth in 12:20.15.
In the 400 meters,
Emma Dikken took third in 57.68 seconds to rank ninth in program history.
Freshman
Kendra Ritzmann also took third in the triple jump with an effort of 11.33 meters (37-2.25) to rank sixth in program history. She also stands third in the RMAC this season.
Elsewhere,
Jessie Schaffer finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.32 to move into the No. 4 spot of program history.
Olivia Langner was just one place behind in 1:05.43 and now ranks sixth in CMU history.
Kendall White also moved into the No. 9 spot of CMU history in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:32.81.
The Mavericks will continue their season at home next week, hosting the Maverick Invitational on Thursday and Friday (Apr. 3-4).
