IRVINE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team moved to 11-5 on the season as they split their two matches in a tri-dual on Wednesday here at Great Park.
The Mavs swept Cal State LA, 5-0 in the middle leg before host Concordia University Irvine bested the Mavs, 4-1 in the final leg.
CUI defeated Cal State LA 5-0 in the first match-up in the morning.
CUI, receiving votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll, is now 14-7 on the season while Cal State LA is now 2-8.
Barett Nolan and
Ania Swartzendruber went 2-0 on the day to lead the Mavs. They won 21-16, 21-14 against Cal State LA's Tehya Chadwick and Zuhal Cetin and then came from a set down to beat CUI's Kelia Giusta and Gabby Reinking, 17-21, 23-21, 15-11. Nolan and Swartzendruber are now 12-4 this season.
The other four Maverick pairs also won in straight sets against Cal State LA as
Jessica Passi and
Taylor Scherff became the third Mav pair to reach double figures for wins this season. They are now 10-6.
Riley Daugherty and
Lizzy Hood lead the Mavs with a 13-3 mark at No. 2.
The Mavs will next head to Tucson, Arizona to play in the Arizona Invitational on Friday and Saturday. They will take on UTEP and the host Wildcats on Friday and will wrap up the Spring Break trip with a Saturday match-up against Central Arkansas.
