Mavs stunned by two late goals in 10-9 setback to Florida Tech

Brummett scores five to lead Maverick effort

MELBOURNE, Florida— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks watched two goals go into their net in the 70 seconds of the game after taking a 9-8 lead with less than three minutes to go as they dropped a heart-breaking 10-9 men's lacrosse decision to host Florida Tech on Tuesday night here at the Panthers' Rick Stottler Field.

The Mavericks received a 5-goal effort from JJ Brummett and rallied from a slight 8-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game with 6:44 to go on Brummett's final tally.  The Mavs when went up 8-7 on an Erich Petersen goal with 2:49 left before banging a potential back-breaking goal off the post with 1:39 left.

The Mavs then picked up a pushing penalty, their only one of the night, as the Panthers went on to convert with a game-tying man-up goal from Joe Coveleski with 70 seconds remaining.

The Panthers then won the ensuing faceoff and ran down the clock before Jakob Terpak scored the game-winner with ten seconds to go while falling to the ground to give his team the win.

The Panthers improved to 4-4 with the victory while the nation's 17th-ranked Mavericks dropped their second game in a 3-game swing through the Sunshine State to fall to 4-2.

The Mavs finished with a 34-23 advantage in total shots but were thwarted by 16 saves from Jax Francisco.

Connor Jensen, Dillon Pless and Ethan Points joined Brummett and Petersen as goal scorers as Jensen also registered two assists as did Eli Bibler.

Coveleski scored four goals for the Panthers.

Mike Edwards won 11 of his 21 faceoffs and scooped up five groundballs while Caden Hathaway recorded three groundballs while causing three turnovers.  CMU's Shaden Shields made nine saves in the complete game effort in net.

The Panthers took a 3-1 lead with three goals in a span of just 1:45 in the first six minutes of the contest and led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.

However, Brummett scored three second quarter goals and gave the Mavs a 6-5 halftime lead with a man-up goal with 4:27 left in the quarter.  Brummett had tied the game just 13 second earlier on a Bibler assist.

Thirty eight seconds before that, PIess scored his goal on a Jensen assist as the Mavs ended up scoring three goals in less than a minute.

They then extended the lead to 7-5 with 6:53 to go in the third quarter on Points' unassisted goal before the Panthers scored the next three goals while holding the Mavs without  a goal for more than 15 minutes to take the 8-7 advantage.

The Mavericks will try to salvage a win from the trip when they head to Saint Leo to face the 13th-ranked Lions on Thursday night at 7 p.m. EDT (5 p.m. Mountain).
