NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team saw a 6-match winning streak come to an end as they fell by 5-0 margins against both FIU and CSUN in a tri-dual on Tuesday afternoon here at the Matador's Beach Volleyball Complex.
CMU is now 10-4 overall.
Host CSUN defeated the nationally-ranked Panther squad, 3-2 in the first dual of the day. The Matadors are now 9-7.
FIU, now 9-10, then came back to snap a 5-match slide with their win over the Mavs. The Panthers were ranked 19th in last week's AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll but slipped one spot to 20
th in this week's poll, which was released during the Tuesday action.
In that dual, Maverick No. 4 pair
Jessica Passi and
Taylor Scherff were able to win the opening set of their match against the Panthers' Annika Castellanos and Arianna Franklin. However, the Panther pair came back to record the 19-21, 21-10, 15-11 win.
FIU won the other five matches, including an exhibition affair, in straight sets.
Against CSUN,
Izzy Burns and
Sofia Kolbe won the first set of the No. 5 battle over Layla Cederlind and Maleya Miles, but were downed 18-21, 21-16, 15-6.
The Matadors won the other four official matches in straight sets although CMU's
Ava Blanco and
Brooke Hartman claimed a 15-21, 21-18, 15-9 win over Morgan Gillinger and Julia Gunner in an exhibition affair.
After playing two Division I foes on Tuesday, the Mavs will take on a pair of Division II opponents in a Wednesday tri-dual at Great Park in Irvine. They will face host Cal State LA and Concordia University Irvine at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. PDT (Noon & 2 p.m. Mountain).
