Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (CMU 9, ASU 1):
The Mavericks opened the day with a strong 9-1 victory in game one as they were led by another stellar pitching performance from Jessalyn Gallegos.
The redshirt freshman dazzled in a five hitter in the circle going all seven innings while allowing just one run, three walks and striking out six in her seventh win of the season.
Gallegos allowed her only run in the first inning before the Maverick offense supported her the rest of the go-around scoring nine unanswered.
Myah Arrieta opened up the scoring for Colorado Mesa with her beginning the attack in the third inning on solo shot home run to make it 1-0. She was then sequenced by Khloe Kubitschek who brought in another run that inning on a sac fly.
In the fourth Arrieta struck again to add to the lead with her singling in another run.
Brynn Escobar added a triple in the fifth inning to drive in one as well with the Mavs then tacking on five more runs in the sixth and seventh innings thanks to productive at bats from four different players.
Jenna Salcido began that sixth inning surge with her hitting her second home run of the year on a solo shot and then being followed by a single from Arrieta and double from Ally Distler to score the other run.
In the seventh, five different players reached base to add to the attack, but it was ultimately Arrieta again who did the damage as she drove in one run on a single and then scored another on a wild pitch. Makayla Westmoreland added the other RBI that inning on a groundout to third base.
Leading 9-1, Gallegos allowed a triple to open the bottom of the seventh inning but stayed focused as she retired the next three batters to seal the win.
The Mavs totaled 12 hits in the win with six different players recording RBIs. Arrieta led the squad going 4-5 in the game with three RBIs herself. Distler and Jackie Oster each tabbed two hits apiece additionally.
GAME 2 (CMU 10, ASU 6):
Finishing the day on yet another win, the Mavs were able to use an early offensive push to bolster the pitching staff as they fought off a late comeback attempt by the Grizzlies.
Colorado Mesa scored nine runs in first three innings to start the game as they came out on fire after their strong offensive performance in game one.
Jessalyn Gallegos and Makayla Westmoreland brought in the first two runs on a single and sacrifice fly in the first inning with the slugging damage to follow after in the second and third.
In the second, Myah Arrieta and Ally Distler both hit home runs for the team with Arrieta's being a three-run shot and Distler's being a two-run.
As if two home runs on the day weren't enough, Arrieta hit yet another home run for the Mavericks in the third inning with this one being a two-run shot. Arrieta now has nine bombs on the year to not only lead the team but also rank first in the conference.
The Grizzlies were able to take back three runs from the Mavs in the fifth inning on a pair of doubles and single, but saw their comeback attempt come to a close after a pitching change retired the inning.
Only a six-run game now, Distler added a run back for the Mavs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.
Leading 10-3, Colorado Mesa went into the bottom of the seventh inning needing just three outs to win the game, but saw some action happen before getting the job done. The Grizzlies scored three runs in that inning as they totaled five singles to move the game within four.
Reliever Maria Nehm finally finished the job though as she struck out the last batter of the game to secure the win.
Starter Sophia Tassinari earned the win in the circle as she went 4.2 innings pitched while only allowing three runs (two earned) and seven hits. She struck out seven in contrast with her record moving to 3-2 on the season now.
Tassinari was relieved by Nehm in the fifth as she went the final 2.1 innings of the game.
Offensively leading the team was Arrieta once again who finished going 4-4 with four RBIs. Distler added a 2-3 day to the team with her also knocking in four of the team's RBIs as well. The two had six of the team's 11 hits and all but one of the extra base hits.
Chloe Valdez had the other one with her collecting a double in the win.
