ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University Softball Team used a 29 run and 24 hit day this afternoon to secure the four-game sweep of the Adams State University Grizzlies at ASU Softball Field.
Winning both games in five innings via run rule, the Mavericks took game three of the series today by a score of 16-4 with the game four score coming in at 13-1.
Following both wins the Mavs now own a 12-game winning streak with them sweeping each of their opponents the last three weeks. The Mavs now sit at 18-8 on the season (16-4 RMAC) with Adams State dropping to 4-28 (2-18 RMAC).
Below is a short recap of each game:
GAME 1 (CMU 16, ASU 4; 5 inn.):
The Mavericks began the day by starting behind early in the contest as they trailed 4-3 in the first inning before scoring 13 runs unanswered en route to their fourth run rule victory of the season.
In the first inning, Chloe Valdez gave the Mavs the initial lead on a three-run home run but saw the early lead quickly vanish as the Grizzlies scored four themselves thanks to a triple and a home run.
Trailing for just the second time this weekend, the Mavs were able to respond to the deficit as they then scored five runs in return in the second inning.
All nine batters came to the plate in the second with the trio of Ally Distler, Chloe Valdez and Makayla Westmoreland each collecting RBIs.
The third inning had the only scoreless frames of the day as Colorado Mesa then extended on their lead in the fourth and fifth innings, with seven of the eight runs happening in the fifth.
Distler tabbed the only run in the fourth thanks to a throwing error on a first and third play, before the team's offense unloaded in the fifth. Distler, Westmoreland and Jenna Salcido each tabbed more RBIs for the team that inning to grow the lead with the other run coming from a single by Ava Stephens.
The Mavs totaled 13 hits in the game with two stolen bags while walking eight times. They were paced by Salcido who went 3-4 in the game with two RBIs. Distler and Valdez each collected four RBIs apiece as well with Westmoreland also adding three herself.
Jessalyn Gallegos earned another victory in the circle with the win as she pitched to her eighth complete game this spring. Gallegos went the full five innings in the game while allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four.
Defensively the Mavs played perfect in the game with them not recording a single error. The Grizzlies in contrast recorded four.
GAME 2 (CMU 13, ASU 1; 5 inn.):
Not slowing down in game two, the Mavs offense stayed potent once again as they used a pair of crooked numbers to easily secure the series sweep.
Opening the game with an eight-spot, the Mavs went up big early in the game as they used seven hits and a home run to quickly be on top.
In the first, Makayla Westmoreland, Ally Distler, Jessalyn Gallegos, Tegan Medina, Jackie Oster and Myah Arrieta all recorded RBIs for the squad with Arrieta's being the biggest as she capped off the inning with a three-run bomb.
Arrieta has now reached double digit home runs this season with that being her 10th and in her career is now a part of the 50-home run club at Colorado Mesa.
The Mavs allowed one run back in the third inning on an RBI double, but continued their dominance in the batter's box in the fifth by scoring five more runs.
Westmoreland added three RBIs to start the attack with her doubling in a trio as she was then followed up by Distler who launched a long ball to bring in two more.
Distler is now at nine home runs on the season as she is the other current Maverick to be in the 50-home run club with 53.
Preslee Christensen earned the win in the game as she went four innings with just five hits and one run. She struck out four and walked just one as well with this being her second consecutive win in two appearances.
Kamdyn Hagerty pitched the final fifth inning in fourth appearance this season.
The Mavs totaled 11 hits in the game with five of the players recording two apiece. Westmoreland led all hitters with four RBIs with Arrieta and Distler each having three.
Every game in this weekend's series recorded at least one home run with Arrieta totaling four herself.
