COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University graduate student
Jennesis Martinez was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Academic Women's Wrestler of the Year and led a league-leading four Mavericks on the First Team Academic All-RMAC team.
Martinez was joined on that team by
Valerie Glenn,
Hania Halverson and
Erica Smith.
Halverson, the inaugural RMAC Academic Wrestler of the Year in 2023-24, and Martinez are repeat selections.
The Mavs also had 11 picks to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll with
Celina Cooke,
Isabella Cruz,
Apple Middleton,
Jayleen Sekona,
Isabeau Shalack,
Maggie Smith and
Miah Weldon joining the four first team picks on that list.
The 10-member first team was selected by a vote of institutional athletic communications directors, based on a combination of athletic and academic accomplishments. To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have a 3.50 or higher cumulative GPA, have completed two consecutive semesters at the their current institution and have used a season of competition.
To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a 3.30 or higher GPA and meet the other requirements.
Martinez holds a 4.0 GPA in her master's of business administration program and completed her undergraduate degree in the same field with a 3.59 GPA. On the mat, she finished her career as a 4-time all-American and fell just one win shy of becoming the first Maverick wrestler to earn five career All-America honors.
In 2024, Martinez went 11-2, winning her first nine matches while gradually working back from injury. The Albuquerque, New Mexico native won the 103-pound title at the RMAC Championships after winning at 101 pounds at the inaugural 2024 RMAC Championships. She also won her third straight regional title and went 2-2 at last week's NCWWC National Championships to wrap up her career with an 87-23 record as one of the most decorated Mavs in program history.
Halverson, a junior out of Kalispell, Montana, also holds a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in exercise science. She posted a 21-9 record while wrestling at 131 pounds this year and won her second straight RMAC title while also pacing the Mavs with 11 dual meet victories.
Glenn is a sophomore secondary education major from Gilroy, California. She holds a 3.98 GPA.
She emerged as the Mavs' starter at 138 pounds and finished the season with a 6-9 record. She took fifth at the RMAC Championships and was 2-2 at the NCWWC Region 8 Championships.
Smith holds a 3.78 GPA and is majoring in psychology. A native of Nuevo, California, she went 24-8 this season and won the RMAC and regional titles at 145 pounds. She was ranked tenth in the nation heading into the national tournament and wraps up her wrestling career with a 71-47 record and four straight national tournament appearances. She was an NCWWC All-American in 2024.
