KINGSVILLE, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball team completed a perfect 4-0 weekend by taking down a pair of NCAA Division I opponents on Saturday here to win the unofficial title at the Javelina Beach Showdown.
After claiming 4-1 wins over host Texas A&M-Kingsville and Wayland Baptist on Friday, the Mavs recorded a 4-1 win over UTEP and then wrapped up the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Tarleton State to move to 8-2 on the season.
UTEP fell to 5-3 at that point but improved to 6-3 with a later win over Wayland Baptist.
Tarleton State fell to 4-3 after falling to the Mavs and then dropped to 4-4 with a loss to the host Javelinas.
The Mavs' No. 1 and 2 duos of
Gracyn Spresser and
Ellie Ask and
Riley Daugherty and
Lizzy Hood both went 2-0 throughout the day as Daugherty and Hood moved to 10-0 on the season. They scratched out a 21-19, 12-21, 15-11 win over Ema Uskokovic and Madison Hill from UTEP before posting a more comfortable 21-17, 21-16 win over Tarleton State's Amay Brown and Grayson Schirpik later in the morning.
Spresser and Ask, who also went 4-0 throughout the weekend, were 21-12, 21-16 winners over the top UTEP duo of Krista Paegle and Averie Threet. Spresser and Ask, then won 21-18, 21-16 over Tarleton State's Emma Halcomb and Allison Bryant.
Barett Nolan and
Ania Swartzendruber were also able to claim a 21-17, 16-21, 15-9 win at No. 3 against UTEP while
Lucy Kaufman and
Izzy Burns won at No. 5 after their Miner opponents had to forfeit due to injury after winning the first set.
Against Tarleton, the Mavs were able to jump ahead 2-0 as
Jessica Passi and
Taylor Scherff followed Daugherty and Hood's win at No. 4. Passi and Scherff defeated Sofia Bendele and Hayden Huber, 21-18, 21-16.
The Texans did get a win at No. 5, winning both sets by 21-19 margins, before Spresser and Ask clinched the dual with their top flight victory.
After playing ten matches in as many days in trips to Arizona and Texas, the Mavericks will return home to Colorado to face Central Wyoming College in a home-opening doubleheader next Saturday
