GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Swimmers
John Walgast and
Brodie Khajuria likely secured NCAA Division II Championship spots while divers
Aiden Coon and
Juli Holt also surpassed the necessary pre-championship qualification standards as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks successfully took advantage of the CMU Last Chance Meet, held Saturday here at the El Pomar Natatorium.
Kenya Meyer and
Mimi Licht, amongst the ten Maverick divers, who had already secured a trip to Indianapolis for next month's NCAA pre-championship qualification meet, also turned in school-record setting efforts on the diving boards.
Walgast turned in a time of one minute, 48.18 seconds, which lowers to a career-best 1:46.98 with the altitude conversion, in the 200-yard individual medley, the first swimming race of the morning. A senior who has narrowly missed national championship qualification in his previous three seasons at CMU, Walgast will rank as high as 15
th on the national top times list pending other weekend results thanks to what was a stellar swim in his last home race.
Meanwhile, in the 200 breaststroke Khajuria registered a time of 1:59.49, which converts to a career-best 1:58.29 with the altitude adjustment, moving up one spot to 18
th on the national list.
The Canadian freshman had originally set a NCAA "B" cut time at last weekend's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
In diving, Meyer scored 319.05 points on six dives off the 1-meter board to break teammate
Jenna Hurley's CMU record of 310.25, set last year.
Meanwhile, Holt was the last of six Maverick women to eclipse the national qualifying standard of 255 points, posting a score of 260.90 points. She had needed a qualifying score from a second meet in order to be eligible for a trip to Indianapolis.
In the 3-meter event, held after swimming, Licht tallied 315.15 points, breaking the CMU 6-dive record of 302 points that
Ally Hrncir had set at last year's last chance meet. Seven divers, including six Mavs were able to eclipse the national qualifying standard of 265 points.
Western Colorado University's Alexandra Wallis did as well, finishing sixth with 272.55 points.
In the men's diving events, Coon scored 325.35 points on the 3-meter to claim his second necessary qualifying score.
David Roethlisberger won that discipline with 379.85 points, edging RMAC Championship Co-Divers of the Meet
Ryan Campbell (375.80) and
Wyatt Hermanson (333.10), who were second and third, respectively.
Hermanson then won the 1-meter with 337.05 points while Campbell took second at 3:21.15.
The Colorado School of Mines also had six swimmers competing.
The Orediggers' Jarod O'Grady lowered his NCAA "B" cut time to 1:48.52 (converted) in the 200 butterfly final minutes after Joseph Lev-Tov lowered his 1,650 free season-best to 15:40.07 (converted).
The Mavericks will now await Wednesday's NCAA Division II Championship selections announcement to determine how many athletes will qualify for the Mar. 11-15 national meet.
