SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Connor Jensen recorded his second straight 4-goal game while
Erich Petersen added a hat-track as the now 15
th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks moved to 2-0 on the young season and in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference lacrosse standings with a comfortable 16-5 road win over the Dominican University Monday here at Penguins' Kennelly Field.
The Penguins were playing their season-opener and first game as members of the conference after playing host to the Mavericks and the Concordia University Golden Eagles for a neutral-site match-up on Saturday. CMU had won that game, a re-match of last year's RMAC Tournament Championship game, by a 13-8 margin.
The Mavericks, who moved up two spots in the latest USILA Division II Poll, released earlier on the day, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Monday's game and led 7-1 after the opening quarter as Jensen scored three goals in the opening spurt.
The Mavericks then scored three goals in each of the three remaining quarters, gradually extending the lead throughout. The Mavs also scored goals late in the waning seconds of each of the first three quarters.
Petersen also had a goal in each of the first three quarters while Maverick sophomore newcomer
Shaden Shields made a dozen saves in those quarters before Grant Booker made two after getting the nod in net for the final quarter.
Offensively,
JJ Brummett and
Logan Smith both chipped n two goals while Brummett added a pair of assists.
CMU finished with a 49-29 advantage in total shots, shooting 19 times in the opening quarter scoring barrage alone.
The Mavs were also able to win 15 of 23 faceoffs as starter
Mike Edwards went 5-for-8 at the "X" while
Kanyan Rhodes (6-8) and
Cam Casados (4-6) won 10 of the remaining 14 draws. Casados also scored CMU's last goal, his first tally of his career.
Ryan Pless had five groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers to help lead the solid defensive effort.
His brother Dillon,
Jack Cooper,
Charlie Droitsch and
Deuce Kirschke also scored for the Mavs. Droitsch's goal was the first of his young collegiate career.
The Mavericks will return home for a brief respite before heading out to the Kansas City area for non-conference games at William Jewell and Rockhurst on Friday night and next Monday (Feb. 24), respectively.
