HAYS, Kan.— Sammy Mobly won the 157-pound bracket as three of the five Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's wrestlers in attendance at the Bob Smith Open placed on Sunday, here at Fort Hays State University's Gross Memorial Coliseum.
The Mavs' other two placers were
Will Alvarado, who placed third at 165 pounds and
Logan Noble, who finished fourth at 184.
AJ Hague, who went 2-2 at 141 and
Tommy Thomas, who went 3-2 in Mobly's bracket, also had successful days.
Mobly went 5-0 on the day to raise his season record to 10-4. He won each of his first three matches by pin and then scratched out a 9-6 sudden victory win over FHSU's Johnny Thomas in the semifinals. Mobly then claimed a 2-1 win over Air Force Prep's Dario Petrucelli in the final to claim his first collegiate tournament title.
Alvarado, now 9-7 on the season, also won his first three matches and went 5-1 throughout the day. He defeated Nebraska-Kearney's Corbin Reisz, 4-1 in sudden victory in the third place match.
Noble went 3-2 throughout the day and won all three matches by pin. He is now 7-6 on the season.
