COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Mia Zuniga was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
The 103-pound junior out of Granger, Washington, went 4-0 at last week's Desert Duals in Las Vegas, Nevada and is the second Maverick to earn the conference award this season joining
Jayleen Sekona, who was recoginized on Nov. 4
Zuniga, ranked eighth in the nation at the time, recorded an 8-2 decision over then No. 1 Rayana Sahagun of Grand Valley State in her final match of Wednesday's competition. Earlier, she had won by forfeit, pin and technical fall.
The transfer from King University is now 18-5 this season and has won six straight and eight of her last nine matches. She is now tied for the team lead in wins with
Adriana Gomez (18-7) and Sekona (18-6)
Zuniga has also moved up to the No. 3 spot in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association's NCAA Division II Rankings, which were announced on Thursday, one spot ahead of Sahagun.
The Mavs are ranked seventh in the team rankings and have five nationally ranked wrestlers in their respective weight classes.
The Mavs will resume their season at the Jan. 9-10 NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
