LAS VEGAS-- The No. 5 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team found tough sledding in this year's 22nd annual Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg College at the Flamingo Hilton Hotel. The Mavericks wrestled five duals on the day and went 1-4 in those duals dropping all four nationally ranked matchups and coming out on top against Vanguard for the second time this season.

All the results are on the bottom portion of this page but we will provide you some of the highlights in each of those segments. 

#8 Simon Fraser (5-1, 3-0 RMAC) 26, #5 Colorado Mesa (3-3, 1-1 RMAC) 19 (Scoresheet)
Jayleen Sekona defeated top ranked Julia Ritchey 4-4 on criteria but it was not enough as the Red Leafs won six of the ten bouts on their way to the 26-19 win over Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks won the first three matches of the dual and then proceeded to drop the next six bouts with two going by fall.

In Sekona's match, her opponent from Simon Fraser, Julia Ritchey, scored a pair of takedowns but Jayleen was able to secure a four-point takedown which gave her criteria in the match and the win over the top ranked opponent. 

Mia Zuniga earned a forfeit at 103 pounds, Adriana Gomez claimed a 13-2 technical fall win at 110 pounds, and Jojo McDaniel pinned her opponent at 117 pounds for the Mavericks other three wins.

The Mavericks and Blue Hose split the ten weight classes but Presbyterian secured 10-0 technical falls at 131 pounds, 138 pounds, 145 pounds and 180 pounds to secure the two point victory, 21-19. Mia Zuniga (103), Adriana Gomez (110) and Jayleen Sekona made it 2-for-2 on the day with wins while Sophia Cornish and Lorianna Piestewa picked up their first wins of the day.

Colorado Mesa won four bouts in the 26-19 loss to host Wartburg College. The Mavericks wins were scattered as Mia Zuniga notched a pin at 103 pounds while Lorianna Piestewa picked up a 10-0 technical fall at 124 pounds through the first five bouts. Gretchen Donally (145) and Maggie Smith (180) earned wins in the back half of the dual for the Mavericks.

Mia Zuniga made it a perfect 4-0 on the day as she defeated top ranked Rayana Sahagun 8-2 to open the dual against the No. 3 Lakers. Adriana Gomez followed her with a 3-1 win over former teammate in Kiely Tabaldo at 110 pounds. Grand Valley State would go on to win six of the remaining eight bouts en route to a 26-16 win over the Mavericks.

Thalia Vogelsang had a win over a ranked opponent at 131 pounds with an 8-4 win over No. 6 Hannah Palise for her first win of the day.

Gretchen Donally had the Mavericks final win of the dual with a 6-5 decision victory over Clarissa Agostini at 145 pounds.
