Alex Castaneda both went 4-1 and placed fourth and fifth respectively on a strong Sunday of action for the Colorado Mesa University men's wrestling team here at the 46
th Annual Midwest Classic.
The Mavericks, ranked 18
th nationally as a team, finished in a tie for 13
th place in the team standings alongside the host University of Indianapolis Greyhounds with 64 team points.
The Mavs were in 16th place after Saturday's portion of the 46-team tournament and had advanced six wrestlers into Sunday.
Carranza, who hails from Victorville, California, has now placed at the tournament in three straight seasons. Ranked ninth nationally, he defeated three fellow nationally-ranked wrestlers throughout his Sunday run. He started that by pinning Pitt-Johnstown's Bradley Morrison before claiming a 5-1 win over No. 14 Brayden Mirjavadi of Grand Valley State.
Carranza then won another match by pinning, taking down No. 11 David Bertrand of King. He then scored an 11-3 major decision win over fourth-ranked Marvelous Rutledge of Lander. He then fell to Central Oklahoma's Garrett Wells in the third place match to finish the weekend with a 6-2 record.
Castaneda also had three ranked wins as he finished the tournament with a 6-2 record. He needed extra time to pull out a 4-1 sudden victory win over Adams State's Angel Flores in his first match on Sunday before he pinned No. 12 Gavin Garcia of the host Greyhound squad in his second.
The Eaton, Colorado product scored a 6-3 win over No. 7 Sabian Russell of Quincy before he fell to eighth-ranked Matthew Sarbo of Pitt-Johnstown in the consolation semifinals.
He then placed fifth after receiving a medical forfeit against fifth-ranked Ethan Dody of Upper Iowa.
True freshman
Levi DiCugno also recorded a Sunday win, pinning Seton Hill's Kane Kettering in the first period of his first match. He then fell to 11
th-ranked Dajun Johnson of Wisconsin-Parkside as his tournament was ended just one match shy of placing amongst the top eight.

AJ Hague and
Ruben Samuelson all lost their first matches on Sunday morning to end their tournament runs.
The Mavs will be back in action at another tournament next Sunday, wrestling at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada.
