MARSHALL, Mo. – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team wrapped up competition at the annual Missouri Valley Open on Saturday (Nov. 22) morning. The Mavericks finished with a pair of top-8 placers in 103-pounder Mia Zuniga and 110-pounder Adriana Gomez.
 
Zuniga finished in eighth place at 103 pounds as she went 2-1 on the day. Zuniga started off with a pin of Abigail Mendoz of Quincy and followed up with a pin of William Jewell's Juliana Alejandro at the 5:47 mark of the bout.
 
The Granger, Wash. native went on to lose to Katey Valdez of McKendree by technical fall 12-2 before defaulting the seventh-place match to Victoria Safranov of University of Alberta.
 
Laveen, Ariz. native and No. 10 ranked Adriana Gomez was the Mavericks highest finisher of the day as she placed fifth at 110 pounds going 1-1. She opened the day with a tough technical fall loss to McKendree's No. 2 ranked Gabrielle Tedesco in the semifinals of 110 pounds.

Gomez dropped a tough 6-5 decision to top-ranked Ava Bayless of Iowa in her second match of the day. She led 5-4 with 15 seconds left in the bout but surrendered a takedown with just six seconds left to fall in the bout.
 
She bounced back in a big way though with a convincing 8-5 win over Trinity Pendergrass of Quincy to claim fifth place in the tournament. Gomez led 6-0 and 8-3 at two different times in the match over No. 7 ranked Pendergrass to claim the win.
 
Following the Thanksgiving break, the Mavericks will travel to Iowa City, Iowa for duals with the Iowa Hawkeyes and Oklahoma State in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
