Grand Junction, CO.- Colorado Mesa hosted the Colorado School of Mines over the weekend for a two game series.
The Mavs would have their first real test at home as Mines came to town. The Rivercity Sportplex was packed and the Mavs used it as early in game 1 Freshman Dylan Sowa would fire an odd angle shot where Freshman Jacob Roggie would find the rebound to put the Mavs up 1-0 with 10 minutes to play in the First. The rest of the period would be very tightly played but the Mavs would hold on to the lead into the intermission.
In the second the Mavs would take a penalty early and Mines would take advantage of it tying the game at 1. The Mavs would take the lead back when Freshman Marcus Ray would find a rebound for his 10th goal of the season. The Mavs would maintain the pressure throughout the period and even add to their lead as Senior Captain Ethan Gotchey would give Freshman Brian White a beautiful feed to make the game 3-1. The Mavs would get a powerplay of their own towards the end of the first period where Junior Mason Ripley would find Senior Larry Simons for a one time goal to extend the mavs lead to 3. In the third Jacob Roggie would score his second of the game to make the game 5-1. Mines would have a late push scoring two goals in the last five minutes of the game but Sophomore goaltender John Hickam would stand tall stopping 42 Mines shots over the span of the game to backstop the Mavs to a 5-3 victory.Â
Game 2 would have a similar start to game 1, very close, very tight start. Mines would find room on a power play to score the game's first goal. Besides the one goal the period was fairly even. In the second mines would add to their lead with a bouncing puck that was whacked in. The Mavs would bounce back when Sophomore Ethan Levesque would blast a shot that was tipped twice before getting past the Mines goaltender, Ben Pedigo would get the last touch scoring his first goal of the year. The Mavs would get another powerplay opportunity soon after to tie the game, but Mines would get a hold of a loose puck in the neutral zone and score a short handed goal. Mines would take a 3-1 lead into the third where they would add one more goal to take a 4-1 win.Â
