Hansson leads Mavs in Friday dual against Division I Utah

Four other Mavs claim wins while Juarros surpasses NCAA diving standard

SALT LAKE CITY— Olivia Hansson won two events while Kiara Borchardt, Aron Jonson, Ada Qunell and Richard Schmiedefeld all won once to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming team's efforts in a Friday afternoon inter-divisional dual against the NCAA Division I University of Utah here at the Ute Natatorium.

Hansson, who leads the NCAA Division II top times list in both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle, claimed big wins in both of those disciples.  She also took second in both the 200 free and the meet-capping 200 free relay alongside Qunnel, Borchardt and Tori Bartusiak as the Mavericks, 0-3 in duals against Division I opposition this season, battled to the end of what was a 192-108 Ute victory.

Hansson was the top point scorer in the meet, picking up 22 of the Mavs' team points.

Meanwhile, Jonson and Schmiedefeld won the 200 breaststroke and 50 free to lead the Maverick men, who are now 1-1 in duals this season, after the 228-72 Ute win.

Jax Juarros also surpassed the NCAA Championship qualifying standard with a runner-up finish in the men's 1-meter diving event.

Hansson was the first individual winner of the afternoon and took the 1000 free by 8.78 seconds over Utah's Abigial Pope.  Later, Hansson won the 500 free by 3.02 seconds over Utah's Taylor Tomey.

The Mavericks also sprinted to victory as Qunell and Schmiedefeld swept the 50 free events with Qunell taking the women's win in 24.40 seconds, out-touching Maela McKallip.

Meanwhile, Schmiedfled won the men's race in 21.19 seconds.

Borchardt also sprinted to a winning time of 57.74 seconds in the 100 butterfly while Jonsson won the 200 breast for the second straight meet, touching in 2:02.74.

In addition to their four event wins, the Maverick women claimed seven other second place finishes throughout the 16-event dual.

Taylar Hooton, Antonia Leese, Borchardt and Qunell combined for the first in the 400 medley relay, finishing in 3:48.04.  Hansson then finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.76.

Hooton then then took second in the 100 back in 57.05 seconds while Abby Uhl finished third in 58.49.

The Mavs also went 2-3 in the 200 fly as Bartusiak finished in 2:09.69 while Amber Siverts was right behind in 2:10.82.

Qunell then added another second place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.06 seconds before Uhl did the same in the 200 back with a mark of 2:05.39.

Qunell, Borchardt, Bartusiak and Hansson also finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.71.

Meanwhile, Kenya Meyer led the Maverick women's diving contingent, taking third in the 3-meter event with 252.75 points after taking fourth in the 1-meter with 236.48 points over six dives.

Juarros led the Maverick men's divers, placing second on the 1-meter with 290.18 points, going over the NCAA qualifying standard of 285.  Ryan Campbell was the top Maverick in the 3-meter event scoring 275.93 points to finish third.

The Ute men took maximum points in the first four events of the dual before Jonsson scored second place points in the 100 breast with a time of 56.44 seconds to preview his later 200-yard win.

Meanwhile, CMU freshman Micah Moore took third in the 200 fly (1:53.86) before Schmiedefeld won the 50 free.  The German sophomore then took second in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.98, preceding Jonsson's 200 breast victory.

The Mavs also received a third place time of 51.02 seconds from Oskar Sawicki in the 100 fly before Schmiedefeld, Marcos Otero, Jacob Sampson and Holden Convertino finished third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.51 to finish the meet.

The Mavericks will now return home and prepare for the TYR/CMU Invitational, which begins on Nov. 19.  The mid-season invite has typically been a bonanza of fast NCAA Championship qualifying times.
