Mavericks Sweep Colorado College

Colorado Springs, CO.- Colorado Mesa travels to Colorado Springs for a two game series against Colorado College over the weekend.

The Mavericks were on the road this weekend to play the CC Tigers, in game one the Mavericks started off slow being outshot by the Tigers in the first period. However, the Mavs would score the first goal as Freshman Dylan Sowa would finish off a rebound left in front of the net less than 5 minutes in. Throughout the period the Mavs would be outplayed by the Tigers but with less than three minutes left in the period Freshman Jacob Roggie would score on a beautiful individual effort to break into the zone and fire one far side to double the Mavericks lead into the intermission.

In the second period Freshman Marcus Ray would extend his goal streak to 5 straight games by burying a rebound through the five hole of the Tiger's goalie. Less than two minutes later the Tigers would cut the lead back to two goals off a high screen tip. Both teams would get big kills in the second to keep the game 3-1 into the intermission. The Tigers would score early in the second off of a turnover deep in the Mavs defensive zone. Roggie would take the puck coast to coast and score his second goal of the game to extend the Mavs lead back to two. The Mavs would take a penalty again in the middle of the third and the Tigers would take advantage of this one to once again cut the Mavs lead down to 1 with 5 minutes remaining. Freshman goaltender John Hickam would hold on to the Mavs lead with some astonishing saves in those last 5 minutes to add to his 34 save night. Freshman Brian White and Sophomore Tristan Brooks would score empty net goals as the Mavs would take down the Tigers 6-3 in game 1.

Game 2 would be a better outing for the Mavs as yet again they would get the games first goal as Junior Ryan Koch would go coast to coast and snipe the top corner on a beautiful effort. The Mavs would add to their lead just 4 minutes later as Freshman Ian Feighny would score his first career CMU goal off of a rebound. The Mavs would take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. In the second the Mavs would get caught in their own zone and the Tigers would jump on this as they cut the lead to one on an odd angle shot. Senior Captain Ethan Gotchey would give the Mavs the two goal lead yet again with a rebound goal of his own. In the third Senior Mason Ripley would find Senior Larry Simons to give the Mavs a three goal lead. The Mavs would have plenty of powerplay opportunities in the third but would sweep the weekend series with a 4-1 win.
