Phoenix, Ariz.- Colorado Mesa traveled down to Arizona for a 3 game road trip against Grand Canyon University, Park University Gilbert, and Arizona State University.
The Mavericks played GCU in game 1 of their long road trip,GCU would capitalize on a neutral zone turnover early jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first period. The first period would be filled with turnovers on both sides of the puck but the Mavs would get into penalty trouble early. GCU took advantage of this, doubling their lead in the first on a back door goal. The Mavs would bounce back as Marcus Ray would score his 2nd goal of the year to cut the lead back to 1. GCU would lead 2-1 after the first period. The second period would be played tighter as both teams set a strong forecheck. However, GCU would add to their lead in the second when a shot was tipped by a Maverick into the net. GCU would hold their 3-1 lead into the third period. In the third the Mavs would have an early push back as Freshman Dylan Sowa would shoot white turning to fire past his first career CMU goal. This would prove too little too late as GCU would defeat the Mavs 3-2.
The Mavs would look to bounce back against Park University Gilbert Buccaneers. The Mavericks came into this game looking to score a little too much as they let up multiple odd man rushes in the first period and the Bucs took advantage scoring the game's first goal. The mavs would take over from there as Marcus Ray would score a hattrick, Senior Evan Wagner would score 2 goals, Sophomore Tristan Brooks would score two, Dylan Sowa would score again, Sophomore Connor Hassenstab would score his first of the season, Sophomore Levi Krantz would score his first of the season and Freshmen Brian White and Jacob Roggie would score their first career goals. Freshman Matt Tater would win his first career game as the Mavs would win 12-3.
The Mavs looked to keep the ball rolling against ASU, Arizona State was a top ranked team going into this matchup. The first period would be closely played as both teams would get power play opportunities but neither would capitalize on them. In the second ASU would capitalize on the power play with a heat seeking shot. The Mavs would tie the game as Marcus Ray would score yet again as Marcus Ray would score his 5th goal in 6 games. Senior Larry Simons would give the Mavs the lead off of a pass from Dylan Sowa. The Mavs would carry their 2-1 lead into the second intermission. In the third ASU would tie the game early in the period on a 2 on 1. The Mavs would take back the lead when Simons would score his second of the game on a pass from Krantz. The Mavs held the lead until 20 seconds left in regulation when ASU would capitalize on a power play to tie the game at 3. The game would head to overtime where the Mavs would get a powerplay early. But ASU would get a breakaway and squeak one in to beat the Mavs 4-3 in overtime.
The Mavs look to bounce back against UCCS for the 2025-26 home opener October 17th!
