GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team is ranked 15
th in the country as a team and has two individuals well within the top 100, according to the initial NCAA Division II National Collegiate Golf Rankings, released this week by the SCOREBOARD Powered by clippd.
In other news, sophomore
Leo Lavalle was named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Men's Golfer of the Week on Thursday afternoon by conference officials, becoming the third Maverick this fall to earn the honor.
Those SCOREBOARD rankings will be a major factor in the eventual NCAA Division II Super Regional selection process.
The current rankings only include the Mavs' first three team tournaments, which saw the Mavs win both of their first two before taking seventh at the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya.
They do not yet include this week's Ryan Palmer Foundation Invite, which saw the Mavs tie for third in the 16-team field as Lavalle took second place in a field of 89 as the top NCAA finisher.
CMU has 40.89 weighted points in the rankings and have a combined 25-6 record against fellow NCAA Division II teams through three events.
The Mavs also sit fourth in the rankings amongst teams in the South Central Region behind only No. 7 West Texas A&M, No. 8 St. Mary's (Texas) and No. 13 UT Permian Basin.
In the individual rankings,
Dylan Everett sits 31
st while Lavalle sits 61
st. Everett won the Travis Roy Memorial Invitational to begin the year and finished 16
th at 18
th at the following two tournaments.
He and
Timmy Cavarno earned RMAC Golfer of the Week awards in back-to-back weeks before Lavalle's honor on Thursday.
Lavalle posted a 9-under par total of 204, the best 54-hole total of his career at this week's tournament in Amarillo, Texas. He fired a bogey-free 6-under par 65 in the opening round on Tuesday and posted an even par round of 71 in the second before carding a 68 in the third and final round on Wednesday.
In the process, he finished second only to only an Odessa (Texas) College player from the National Junior College Athletic Association while besting all of the other NCAA Division II players in the field at this week's event at the Amarillo Country Club.
The Queretaro, Mexico native was named as the RMAC Freshman of the Year in 2024-25. He has also had a fine season this fall, recording two second place finishes to book-end the season while placing 11
th and 10
th in the middle two tournaments.
The Mavs, who were also ranked 18
th in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, released last Friday have now concluded the fall portion of their season.
