Mavs to host Yellow Jackets in solo contest this week

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Playing to just one game this week at home, the #23 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team hosts Black Hills State this coming Sunday in their third week of RMAC competition.

Hosting the Yellow Jackets for their First Responders Day, the Mavericks will look to kick off at 11 A.M. on Sunday with their game being the first of two that day as the Men's Soccer Team plays after at 2 P.M. In addition to the First Responders Day event, it will also be food drive day where any fan who comes to the game with a non-perishable food item will receive free entry.

This will be the Mavs second straight home game before they embark on a four-game road stretch the following two weeks.

LAST WEEK'S GAMES

The Mavericks, ranked 22nd in last week's national poll, posted their fourth straight win and third straight shutout on Sunday, celebrating Senior Day with a 4-0 home win over Western Colorado.

Additionally, the Mavs started a Friday twilight game at Fort Lewis in Durango but were thwarted by lightning delays, which forced a postponement in the 12th minute. In the end the game was ruled a no contest as decided by the schools and conference with it not being made up in the future.

In the Sunday win against the Mountaineers, Parker Mairs, Kylie Wells, Olivia Bariao-Arce and Ellie Duncan all scored for the Mavs while largely outshooting Western, 26-10.

Keely Wieczorek also made seven saves to record her RMAC-leading sixth shutout of the season, all of which have come at home.

The Mavs have now won 12 straight games over Western dating back to 2016.

CMU sits at 6-0 at home this season while not having conceded a single home goal.  They are unbeaten in their last 14 home games (13-0-1) over the past two seasons.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS

Remaining as a top-3 offense and defense in the conference, the Mavs have recorded a total of 19 goals this season while in contrast giving up just four to opponents.

They are averaging just a little over two goals a game with a 2.111 scoring average while holding opponents to 0.44 goals per game.

Individually, Kylie Wells leads the offense with eight goals herself while sitting as the conference leader. She owns four game-winners and has the most points in the conference with 18.

Beyond Wells eight others have scored for the team this year with the trio of Ellie Duncan, Sarah Dunn and Brooklyn Baird being tied for second on the team at two goals each.

There have been a total of 14 assists recorded as well with Wells and Olivia Barrett leading the way at two apiece. 10 others have recorded one assist each.

Keely Wieczorek has remained in the net every minute this season totaling 33 saves while owning six shutouts. In the RMAC she sits in the top-3 of goals against average, saves, and shutouts per game.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT

The Yellow Jackets are 4-4-2 this season while starting RMAC play 1-3 after four-straight one goal decisions. They are currently on a three-game losing streak.

This past week they lost both of their games played at home with them dropping a tight 1-0 match to #9 Mines on Friday before falling 2-1 to CSU Pueblo on Sunday.

Leading the team has been Redshirt Freshman Peyton Hill with her totaling four goals to this point and adding two assists. Beyond Hill, Leah Day has the second most goals at two with seven others scoring one apiece.
