YORK, Neb. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team had 18 wrestlers compete at the York Open on Saturday (Jan. 18) afternoon on the heels of their win in Chadron last night. They had 10 of their wrestlers earn a top-4 spot at their respective weight to lead the tournament.
The Mavericks had the two finalists at 110-pounds with
Sophia Cornish and
Isabella Morales reaching the championship bout. The two would not compete against each other with Cornish picking up first-place with a no contest win over
Isabella Morales. No wins or losses will be recorded for that bout.
Cornish earned a pin in her first matchup of the tournament over Edyn Hartman of Waldorf at 1:06 before a pair of decision victories led to the final. The freshman defeated Fort Hays State's Isabella Cross 9-5 to earn the finals spot.
Morales opened with a bye before a 10-4 decision victory over Lita Cruz of Grandview sent her to the semifinals. There, the junior would pick up a 7-1 win over Josiah Ortiz of Fort Hays State to send her to the final.
Freshman
Lorianna Piestewa competed for the first time since November when she stepped foot on the mat today. Piestewa placed third at 124 pounds after a 3-1 day which saw her record two quick first period pins. In the third-place match, she defeated her teammate
Thalia Vogelsang by technical fall 13-2.
Vogelsang went 2-2 on the day to take fourth place at 124 pounds with a technical fall win in her opener and a pin of Markayla Lottie of Avila at 2:29.
Fellow freshman

Alison Evans and

Evans reached the final after earning an 8-3 decision victory over Zoey Smalley of Missouri Valley College before falling to Kelani Corbett of Missouri Valley College in the final by tech fall 10-0.
Smith went 0-2 on the day but wound up in fourth-place due to the odd bracket.
