LA MIRADA, Calif.— Devyn Rodriguez won a doubles match with partner
Jade Brilhante while she and
Makenna Livingston both won their first-round singles matches to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team on the opening day of the ITA West Regional Championships, which began Thursday at Biola University and nearby Whittier College.
Brilhante and Rodriguez started the morning with an 8-6 win over Point Loma Nazarene's Alina Kupfer and Anna Pallencaoe in the opening round but were downed 8-5 by fourth-seeded Cheyenne Houkes and Sophie Rachor of Concordia University Irving in the Round of 16.
The Mavs' other two doubles teams were bounced in the opening round.
In singles, the Mavs went a combined 2-3 in the opening round as Livingston was able to win by a 6-3, 6-4 margin over Annabelle Mulick of Cal State Stanislaus to claim her tenth career ITA Regional win. However, Livingston fell, 7-5, 6-3 to Point Loma Nazarene's Arianna Audello in the round of 32 to end her run.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez cruised past Biola's Dafne Andres Paton by a 6-1, 6-1 margin in the opening round before dropping a 6-2, 6-4 match to Azusa Pacific's Vini Margaret Bautista in the second round.
Brilhante and
Delia Maier were also winners in consolation singles matches, according to CMU Coach
