AZUSA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University doubles duo of William Leschig and Henry Scheck won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals while leading the Maverick men's tennis team's first day efforts at the ITA West Regional Championships, which got underway Thursday here at Azusa Pacific University and nearby Citrus College in Glendora.

The Mavericks' Philemon Jabin, Diogo Manzano and Romain Payan also won their opening round singles matches before each were downed in the second round.

Leschig and Scheck, the second seeds in the 32-team doubles draw, squeaked out an 8-7 (9-7) win in the tiebreaker of their first round match against Concordia University Irvine's Keyon Gahvarehchi and Adam Kartzinel and then recorded an 8-6 win over Hawai'i Pacific's Finnegan Heber and Adam Vasir in the second round.

In singles, Manzano was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Menlo's Ian Ramiro Perez Rodriguez in the round of 64 but was knocked out by top-seeded Elias Walter of Azusa Pacific in the second round. 

Payan was able to pull out a 10-5 tie-breaker win over Menlo's Tanguy Calicis after splitting a pair of 6-4 sets with Calicis.  Payan then fell to Point Loma Nazarene's Andrew Suver, the fifth seed in the second round.

Jabin was able to beat Point Loma's Leo Bormann by a 6-4, 7-5 margin in the opening round but dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Westmont's Diego De Cooman in the round of 32.

CMU's Emil Hultman, Leschig, Jamison Pfingston and Scheck also recorded consolation singles wins according to Maverick Coach Dan MacDonald.  The results of those matches are not yet posted on the tournament website.

Leschig and Scheck will play their quarterfinal doubles match at 8 a.m. PST (9 a.m. Mountain) on Friday against Menlo's Henry Riccioni-Brown and Perez Rodriguez.  The semifinals will follow that round while consolation singles play will continue on Friday afternoon.
