Floeck completes Track & Field/Cross Country Coaching Staff

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— New Colorado Mesa University Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Travis Floeck has recently completed the Mavericks' coaching staff for the 2024-25 seasons, promoting two coaches, hiring three others and retaining another.

Floeck, who was hired this summer to oversee the entire program, has promoted Tim Reetz to the role of Associate Head Track & Field Coach.  Reetz will continue to personally coach the CMU sprinters, hurdlers and relay squads while playing a major role in management of the entire program.

Floeck has also promoted Jay Shuman to full-time status after the Palisade native and former Maverick student-athlete worked as a graduate assistant last year.  Shuman will be the Mavs' throws, multis and pole vault coach.

Meanwhile, Floeck has hired former UCCS graduate assistant coach and record-setting jumper Hannah Meek as CMU's new jumps coach.  He has also hired Oregon State record holder and Palisade native Greta Van Calcar as his graduate assistant coach to assist with the cross country and track distance runners.

Additionally, Sam Hyme has been retained as a distance coaching assistant on a volunteer basis.

Josh Mathe, who also serves as the CMU Athletic Department's Nutritionist, has also been added as another volunteer assistant coach.

"I am so grateful for the staff I have in place. It feels like a dream staff and I am extremely confident in each one of them and who they are as people. Priority number one was to make sure the staff was compiled of coaches with high character and who have a passion for helping student-athletes. I am so thrilled to go to work with them each day," Floeck said.

Floeck came to CMU from Division I Idaho, where he was the Vandals' head distance and assistant track and field coach for the past nine seasons.

Reetz has been on the Mavericks' coaching staff since the fall of 2018 and has coached ten first team and ten second team All-Americans as well as the first ever female NCAA Division II National Championships in CMU athletic history in the 2021 Indoor Women's 4x400-meter relay team.  He also served as the head coach of the Maverick cross country teams for two seasons in 2019 and 2020 and had a major impact in the Mavericks' recent successes, including multiple RMAC Championship team runner-up performances.

"The success of the sprinter's here at Colorado Mesa under Coach Reetz's tenure is truly unreal," Floeck said.

"He is a phenomenal coach who has a lot of pride in what the program has accomplished. His leadership has been on display in my first few weeks here. It was really a no-brainera to do everything I could to retain Coach Reetz. I have already learned a lot from him."

Shuman began the 2023-24 season as a graduate assistant and the track & field program's recruiting coordinator and ended up taking over the program's throws coach for the 2024 outdoor season.  In that season, he guided six all-conference performers, including NCAA Championship qualifier Augustine Hancock, the first CMU women's thrower to ever win an RMAC title.

His women's throwers also set new school records in all four throwing events throughout the season, which saw the CMU throwers combined to score 28 women's and 20 men's points at last year's RMAC Championships, contributing significantly to the Mavs' best ever conference championship finishes.

"Coach Shuman built a lot of momentum with the throw's crew last spring and we wanted to keep that momentum going. He has really impressed me with his work ethic and organization. He brings so much value to the program with his experience across multiple event areas and a thirst to learn more," Floeck said.

Meek comes to CMU after a 5-year athletic and 2-year coaching career at UCCS, where she shined in both roles.  As an athlete, Meek helped the Mountain Lions win seven RMAC team titles and is still the Mountain Lions' indoor and outdoor long jump record holder.  A native of Pueblo West, Colorado, Meek earned ten overall USTFCCCA All-America honors in the long and triple jump events and was the national runner-up in the long jump at the 2021 NCAA outdoor championships.  She also won six RMAC titles and was named as the RMAC's Field Athlete of the Year on three separate occasions while earning the regional award in the 2021 indoor season.

As a graduate assistant coach, Meek helped the Mountain Lion track & field squads win four RMAC titles over the past two years.  She also coached 2024 RMAC Decathlon Champion and NCAA Qualifier Torben Hast.

"The day I interviewed for this position I heard Hannah Meek's name and as soon as I talked to her, I knew I wanted her to join us. She is a very dynamic young coach with an incredible amount of positive energy. She is a winner and it is evident in the way she approaches coaching. She is already well ahead of where I expected her to be and it will be exciting to watch her continue to grow," Floeck said.

Van Calcar is a 2021 graduate of Oregon State, where she was the Beavers' former school-record holder in the indoor 5,000 meters.  She also ran cross country for the Beavers, helping them qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships in the winter/spring of 2021, which was their best ever season, after taking 26th at the Pac-12 Championships.

After a strong high school career at nearby Palisade High School, Van Calcar began her collegiate career at SCAD-Atlanta (Savannah College of Art of Design) in 2016-17, earning NCAIA All-America honors in both cross country and indoor track and field, before moving on to Oregon State.

"Coach Van Calcar and I have some shared heritage, having both been at Oregon State, her as an athlete and myself as a coach, although we never overlapped. I was familiar with her career and when I realized she was here in Grand Junction, reaching out to her and seeing if she would join us was a big priority of mine. She is a tremendous coach with great instincts. She has made my job so much easier and it is truly enjoyable to get to coach where her each day. We are so lucky to have her," Floeck said.

Hyme was also an assistant for the Mavs' last season and helped the CMU women to their best RMAC Cross Country finish in nine years.  She was also a collegiate runner at NCAA Division I Kent State.

"Coach Hyme has a very nurturing nature. She has a big heart and that care is evident with the way she communicates with the team. I have enjoyed the insight she brings at each practice and she has close connections with the team," Floeck said.

Mathe has been a running coach for the 15 years and is the owner of One10 Performance, helping several athletes to qualification for the Boston Marathon and to multiple other ultra distance race finishes and podiums.  He is also an accomplished international ultra endurance athlete and adventurer.  His wife Jen is CMU's head triathlon coach.

"Coach Mathe has a vast amount of experience in different ways that I know will compliment what we are doing. He has a lot of passion for athletics and helping student-athletes. I was extremely excited when he expressed that he wanted to join the staff in a coaching role," Floeck said.
