Travis Floeck named Director of Track and Field / Cross Country

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa Director of Athletics Joan McDermott announced the hiring of Travis Floeck as the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country on Tuesday (July 9) morning. Floeck comes to the Grand Valley after spending the past nine seasons in the Big Sky Conference at the University of Idaho.

"We are very fortunate to have someone the caliber of Travis come to Colorado Mesa," McDermott said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience training athletes in one of the premier conferences in the country. He will get the best out of our student-athletes on the track and in the classroom."

Floeck comes to Colorado Mesa after being the head distance coach and assistant track and field coach at the University of Idaho since 2014. There, he coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, 17 NCAA Championship qualifiers, and 64 Top-10 all-time program performances. In 2023, the men's cross country team boasted a 3.89 GPA while the women's team has finished in the top-3 nationally in team GPA the past two seasons.

"I am absolutely honored to be selected to lead the track & field and cross country program at Colorado Mesa University," Floeck said. "I am grateful to Athletic Director Joan McDermott, University President John Marshall, and the search committee for having confidence in me and providing this amazing opportunity. I already feel so supported and welcomed by the Maverick community.

Prior to his time with the Vandals, he had stints at Oregon State, Lane Community College, and Southern Oregon University. He also is currently the assistant camp director for the Steens Mountain Running Camp, a position he has held since 2014.

At Oregon State, he helped the Beavers transition from a distance only program to a comprehensive track and field team. He assisted in coaching 12 NCAA Championship qualifiers, three NCAA Division I All-Americans and 60 Top-10 program performances.

"Colorado Mesa has had a tremendous amount of success as a track & field/cross country program and across the entire athletic department. When I was on campus it was apparent why. Grand Junction is a beautiful destination, the University is growing and thriving, the facilities are impressive, and the leadership in place is incredibly strong and ambitious," Floeck added as to why this job stood out to him.

The Mavericks are coming off a season where both the men's and women's program placed second at the RMAC Outdoor Championships that were hosted in Grand Junction. They had a combination of 11 All-Americans between the indoor and outdoor season.

In cross country, the men's program placed 12th at the RMAC meet while the women's team placed seventh at the RMAC meet and 10th at the NCAA South Central Region race.

"I can't wait to get to know all the student-athletes and do all I can to support and serve them as they pursue their passions and get a phenomenal education. Their experience as Mavericks will be priority number one for the track & field/cross country staff as we pursue RMAC Championships and trophies at the NCAA Championships."

Floeck's first official day at Colorado Mesa will be Monday July 29.
