Grand Junction, Colo. – The #18 ranked CMU Women's Soccer Team find themselves back in action this weekend as they will host their home-opener against St. Martin's University at 7 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field on Friday Sept. 13.
The Mavericks, who only play once this week, will return to the road next week when they head down to Texas to face a pair of regional foes.
Starting their season this past weekend, CMU would fare 1-0-1 against their opponents with a 2-2 draw against Chaminade University on Sept. 5 and then a 1-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene University on Sept. 7.
Three different players registered goals on the weekend with Abby Fotheringham, Parker Mairs and Sarah Dunn each scoring one goal apiece. Both Mairs' and Dunn's goals would be the first of their careers with Fotheringham tallying the sixth goal of her career. Sauvelyne Randel would also mark the only assist for the Mavs weekend as she helped Fotheringham score the game-winner in Saturday's matchup.
Goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would total five saves on the weekend while recording her first shutout of the season. In her career Wieczorek has totaled 11 solo shutouts with two other combined shutouts.
20 different players appeared for the Mavs in their first two games of the season with four different freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Those freshmen included Mairs, Olivia Barrett, Savanah Miller and Maddie Thorsen.
Upon the Mavs' victory over Northwest Nazarene, Head Coach Jody Lingafeldt was also able to secure her first collegiate win as a head coach. Lingafeldt was hired back in May to become the sixth head coach in CMU Women's Soccer history.
Colorado Mesa would be voted in at #18 this week in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, which was released on Sept. 10. This is their second straight week being ranked after garnishing the #10 spot in the USC preseason poll. In addition, they are currently ranked third in the South-Central Regional poll out of 10 teams. Colorado School of Mines is the only other nationally ranked team from the RMAC and is currently #6. They stand first in the regional poll.
Looking at the weekend, the Mavs will face off against the Saints of St. Martin's University who travel to Colorado from Lacey, Wash.
St. Martin's, who finished the 2023 season 3-8-7, is currently 0-2-0 on the year after suffering two losses to Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay this past week. They have been outscored 1-4 so far and Friday's game will be their first time on the road this Fall.
Their lone goal this season comes from Junior Hinata Kojima who scored in their 3-1 loss to Stanislaus State. Senior Payton Aselton has recorded the only assist of the season for the Saints.
Colorado Mesa will be the first of three RMAC opponents the Saints face this season as they will play Westminster University on Sept. 15 and then Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 20 for the next two games on their schedule.
