Mavericks Keep Rolling

In a day that saw all the spring season weather Colorado had to offer, the Mavs came out on top. It was a successful day of rugby as all starters and finishers were able to earn meaningful minutes in a long day of rugby. The Mavericks started out the morning quickly getting scored on by a fresh Utah State team. Just minutes into the matchup, the home team was down 5-0. This was the first of two times that the Mavericks would trail on the day. It was a battle for the entire first half, but just before the whistle blew at halftime, Carly Scheck broke through and was able to touch down, making this halftime score 5-5. The two minute break was what the Mavs needed to wake up and show up. They came out strong in the second, returning a first minute score with Scheck again scoring. Then, Sarah Penick got into the action with a big full field run. The match rounded out with freshmen Tanner Carroll getting her first points of the season.

The second match of pool play was against a Colorado team. Sarah Penick started off the scoring on this one and then conversion started following suit with Ellen Rickerd tacking on the kick. Scheck and Rickerd would add 7 more points at the 4-minute mark with another quick break and exploitation of a CU gap. Just before half, CU would score to bring the score 14-7 at half. With another second half quick score by Nallely Robles, fresh legs were able to get onto the pitch and finish the match out strong with a 24-17 final.

The final match of pool play was against New Mexico State. Ellen Rickerd got into the early try scoring game with a break up the middle and the afterburners turned on. Scheck returned the conversion and a minute in, the Mavs were up 7-0. NMSU was not going to give up that easily and they marched back with a strong defensive surge and try of their own tying the match at seven. Fresh legs came on and Ashley Bollinger got her running game on and wiggled her way to the try line with another Scheck conversion, making this one 14-7 at half. Early into the second, NMSU got called with a dangerous tackle that stopped CMU from trying so they earned a penalty try. Finishers were put into the match and fresh legs were able to get another try and conversion for a 28-19 final.

The weather really started to roll in as sideways snow was the highlight of the semifinal matchup with Wyoming. The Cowgirls were thriving and scored right out of the gates, giving CMU their second and only come from behind on the day. The snow and wind did not bother Carly Scheck as she broke the UW line and took off for the try line with another quick score. Conversion kicks improved throughout the whole day and Rickerd tacked on two more. Then, Ashley Bollinger started to get hot, scoring just before halftime, another Rickerd conversion made it 14-5 at half. It was all CMU from there. Second half saw another try from Bollinger, and then Scheck tacked on the final blow to make this one 24-10.

The Championship match was another round at a strong CU team. Rickerd started out the scoring and Scheck tacked on another 5 minutes into the half. Liz Thoma would round out the first half giving CMU a 19-0 lead going into the break. Finishers came on and CU was able to add a late try to allow CMU to walk away with this one 19-5 and take home the first place, and undefeated bragging rights of the season. Catch the Mavs in action on the front range. They head to CSU Ft. Collins for the Horsetooth Rock 7s tournament. Mavs will kick off at 10am against the Air Force Academy.
