SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— Thanks in large part to their depth, the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team was able to snap a 6-match slide while picking up their first Pacific West Conference win of the season, 5-2 over the Westmont College Warriors on Wednesday afternoon here at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.
The Mavericks, who improved to 6-11 overall, were able to win the second and third flights in doubles to take the early overall advantage and then won at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles after
Philemon Jabin had won his top-flight singles match.
The Warriors fell to 3-9 and have now lost six straight duals.
CMU's win also kept the Mavericks very much alive for a PacWest Tournament spot next month and helped set up a pivotal clash with Fresno Pacific on Thursday morning in Fresno. The Mavs will also take on NAIA Jessup in a neutral-court encounter there on Thursday afternoon.
In Wednesday's win, southern California (Camarillo) native
Henry Scheck, former Ventura College standout
Philemon Jabin and Swedish sophomore
Emil Hultman all went 2-0 to lead the Mavs to victory.
Scheck and
William Leschig were 6-3 winners over Logan Thompson and Owen Vander Ark at No. 2 doubles while Hultman and Jabin sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 No. 3 doubles win over Michael Hopkins and Goor Adiv.
Jabin then won the first completed singles match by a 6-4, 6-4 margin over Austin Stone to snap a 10-match losing streak in the Mavs' No. 1 spot of the lineup.
Scheck then put the Mavs up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Adiv at No. 4 singles before
Jorge Abreu clinched the dual with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Preston Hastings in the sixth flight of the singles lineup
The Mavs led 4-0 at that point and added a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-5) win over Hultman at No. 5 singles.
The Warriors were able to win the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 and 3 singles matches but could not match the Mavs' overall firepower, which also included a 6-2 exhibition doubles win by
Shawn Springer and
Jamison Pfingston.
