Mav men split Friday matches

CMU bounces back for 4-3 win over Rockhurst after falling to UNK

KEARNEY, Neb.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore Henry Scheck claimed a 10-5 win in the No. 4 singles tiebreaker to clinch the Mavericks' 4-3 men's tennis victory over Rockhurst University during a Friday split here in the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center.

The Mavericks, now 3-3 overall, had dropped a 4-0 decision to host University of Nebraska-Kearney earlier in the afternoon.

Against the Hawks (1-1) in the night-cap, the Mavericks fought from behind to win three straight and four of the six total singles decision to claim the victory.  Scheck delivered the clincher, taking his match over Gustavo Gil by a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) margin.

The Mavs had also won earlier decisions at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles.

William Leschig was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Alex Tikhomov on Court 2 while Diogo Manzano took a win over Semyon Tsyrenov by the same scoreline on Court 3.  Emil Hultman also claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Agustin Cortes at No. 5 singles as the Mavericks went up 3-2 on the team scoreboard setting up Scheck to clinch the dual.

In doubles, Philemon Jabin and Hultman won at No. 2 by a 6-4 score over Tikhomov and Gil.  However, the Hawks won the other two doubles matches to take the overall 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

The Mavs were not as fortunate in the earlier match-up with UNK (3-2), which was played to clinch.  The Lopers won two of the three doubles bouts by 6-3 margins while Jabin and Hultman were tied at 5-5 in their affair.

The Lopers then won all three completed singles matches although Manzano and Hultman had won the opening sets of their unfinished singles match-ups.

The Mavericks will close out their weekend on Saturday morning when they face 20th-ranked Northwest Missouri State at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain).
