GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Six Colorado Mesa University Mavericks hit home runs as newcomers
Chloe Valdez and
Cailynn Parsons delivered walk-off shots to implement the mercy rule in the Mavs' 14-4 and 10-1 Sunday Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wins over the visiting Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.
The Mavericks had also walked-off with a 5-4 win in Saturday's second game and swept the weekend series with the Orediggers while extending their winning streak to eight games while remaining perfect in the RMAC at 8-0. Both of Sunday's wins came in five innings as the Mavericks improved to 10-4 overall. Mines fell to 5-9 overall and to 2-6 in the RMAC.
Four of the Mavs' eight conference wins have come via the mercy-rule.
Myah Arrieta and
Ally Distler also hit home runs in the first game while
Ava Fugate, who hit the walk-off winner on Saturday, and
Miranda Pruitt hit blasts in the second.
Meanwhile, all four Maverick pitchers worked during the doubleheader, surrendering just eight combined hits to the Orediggers throughout the twin-bill.
Game 1
The first game was a slug-fest in the early going as Sidney Wilson and Distler exchanged two-out solo home runs in the first inning.
The Orediggers' Cassidy Chvatal then hit a 3-run homer in the top of the second to give the Orediggers a 4-1 lead, their only one of the day.
However, Maverick fifth year senior
Iliana Mendoza answered in the bottom of the second, hitting an RBI double down the right field line to cut the gap to 4-2 just three pitches before Arrieta hit a game-tying home run.
The Mavs then added five more runs on four hits in the bottom of the third as they batted around while building a 9-4 lead. Mendoza had the biggest blow of the inning, plating
Emma Roach and
Bella Aragon on her second double of the game while RBI singles from Aragon and Distler and an RBI ground out by
Dakota DiPaola also aided the Mavs' barrage.
Leving the bases loaded later in that third inning, before stranding two on in the fourth, the Mavs then poured on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Arrieta singled before scoring on a Fugate double. Distler then singled before Valdez, a transfer from Division I College of Charleston, hit her first homer as a Mav and just the second of her collegiate career, a 3-run shot to center as the Mavs walked-off with the 10-run win.
Marisa Nehm improved to 4-0 from inside the circle as she allowed just two hits in 3 2/3 innings of solid relief work.
The Mavs finished with seven extra-base and 12 overall hits, cranking out four doubles in the game. Arrieta was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Distler went 3-for-3 with a walk while scoring three times. Mendoza was also 2-for-2 with a walk and plated three runs on her two doubles.
Game 2
The second game started off defensive, before Fugate hit a 3-run homer to break the deadlock in the bottom of the third inning.
The Orediggers then managed to get an RBI walk from Chvatal in the top of the fourth but left the bases loaded as they trailed 4-1 through 3 ½ innings.
Pruitt then took advantage hitting a 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the fourth before the Mavs quickly implemented the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth as Arrieta drew a walk before Fugate and Distler singled. Following a strikeout, Aragon then drew a 4-pitch RBI walk to make the score 7-1 while setting the table for Parsons' walk-off grand slam, CMU's first grand slam of the season.
The freshman from Gilbert, Arizona now has two home runs this season.
Christa Zagala picked up the win for the Mavs, going four innings while giving up just three hits while getting herself out of the fourth-inning jam, that proved invaluable.
Hannah Sattler then worked a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
Fugate added a double in the game and went 3-for-3 in the game and 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits throughout the doubleheader. Parsons and Pruitt also had 2-hit games as the Mavs out-hit the Orediggers, 9-3 in the night cap.
The Mavs also played errorless softball throughout the doubleheader.
