GLENDALE, Ariz. — Winning four of six singles matches lifted the Colorado Mesa men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over Arizona Christian on Friday (Feb. 16) at the Paseo Racquet Center.
Earlier in the day, the Mavericks lost a tough 4-3 dual to former RMAC rival Western New Mexico.
The Mavs started off the dual against the Firebirds by winning two of three doubles matches for that crucial team point, then won the Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles matches to put the dual away.
Diogo Manzano went 2-0 on the day, winning his No. 3 singles match against Arizona Christian 7-5, 6-4 after winning a tough match against the Mustangs.
Henry Scheck, Emil Hultman and Jorge Abreu followed with straight-set victories, dropping eight total games — Hultman and Abreu won their matches 6-1, 6-1 and Scheck lost four games in his No. 4 match.
Philemon Jabin lost his No. 1 singles match in straight sets, and Will Leschig dropped the first set of his No. 2 singles match in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5), then lost the second set 6-4.
After sweeping the doubles matches against Western New Mexico, the Mavs struggled in singles, winning only at No. 3 and No. 6.
Manzano gutted out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory at No. 3 and Abreu claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6.
The Mustangs' Mohit Grewall outlasted Hultman 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to clinch the dual.
Jabin dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-3 and Leschig lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Western New Mexico won another three-setter at No. 4, with Brendan Lock defeating Henry Scheck 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
The Mavs close out their desert trip at 10 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 17) against Ottawa University at Valley Vista High School in Surprise.
