GRAND JUNCTION, CO. - Colorado Mesa Hockey split the road trip series against Colorado College last time these two teams met. This would be the second to last home stand of the season for the Mavericks.
Â
Both games would see
Chris McElroy get the nod in net. The Mavericks started the game slow which proved to be their downfall, as two early penalties would allow for CC to jump on the board. The Tigers would then net another goal less than a minute after their first for a 2-0 lead over CMU.
Â
Heading into the second period CMU looked to chip away at the deficit. However, neither team would be able to net one, despite the Mavericks having all the momentum. CMU out shot CC in all three periods of the game.
Â
While in the third, the Mavericks got on the board to make it a close, 2-1 score. But the Tigers had another rebuttal and would end up putting the game out of reach for the Mavericks who would still get another on the board with 15 seconds left in the game. With a final score of 3-2 in favor of CC.
Â
Game 2 was similar in the sense that the Mavericks would dominate on both ends of the ice.
Â
The first period would see the Tigers get an early lead, but
Collin Fitzgerald would get on the board to make the game 1-1. The Tigers would then get two quick ones in succession to give them their second 3-1 lead of the weekend. With a little over a minute left in the period
Ryan Koch would net his sixth of the season and bring it to within one heading into first intermission.
Â
CMU would come out swinging in the second and dominate in goals and shots in the frame, out shooting the Tigers by 12. The first goal would come from
Eli Wilson after a great defensive play lead to his scoring chance. Freshman
Brayden Wair would then score again minutes later and give the Mavericks their first lead of the night. After going on the powerplay for the second time that evening,
Shjon Kern would gather a rebound and put it in the open net.
Collin Fitzgerald would cap off a four CMU goal period to make the score 6-3.
Â
The Tigers would make one push in the third grabbing one more goal, but it wouldn't be enough, as the game ended 6-4.Â
