FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.— Sophomore
Ty Mitton took second place and was one of three Colorado Mesa University Maverick divers to surpass the NCAA Division II Pre-Championship Qualification standard of 295 points on Friday during 3-meter springboard action at the Lumberjack Diving Invitational here in Northern Arizona University's Wall Aquatic Center.
Mitton was in fourth place after the 6-dive preliminary round but surged up two spots by scoring 316.95 points on his six dives in the final round to finish with a combined score of 587.65 points. Having already knocked out his 11-dive qualification meet requirement earlier in the season, Mitton became the fourth Maverick man to book his trip to the Mar. 11 NCAA qualification meet in Indianapolis.
Ryan Campbell, already assured of qualification, also fared well on Friday, taking third with a combined score of 585.25 points. He won the 1-meter competition on Thursday and added two more NCAA qualification marks. He was in second place after the preliminary round with a score of 286.15 points and then scored 299.10 points in the finals.
Wyatt Hermanson, who was also already qualified for the national meet, fared even better in the finals, scoring 306.20 points on his final six dives to move up a spot to fourth place with a combined total of 564.80 points.
Meanwhile,
David Roethlisberger finished fifth with 559.50 points. He was in the lead after the preliminary round with a score of 289.95 points, just 6.05 points off the necessary national qualification standard.
Aiden Coon finished seventh with 478.70 points for the Mavs.
Cal Poly's Justin Dolezal won the event with 589.35 points to edge Mitton by 1.7 points.
The Mavericks also competed in the team events on Friday.
The Maverick men's "A" team of Campbell, Hermanson and Roethlisberger finished first with 261.95 points while the "B" squad of Coon,
Jax Juarros and Mitton took second in 237.75.
The women's "A" team, made up of
Talia Datilio,
Emma Lence and
Mimi Licht took fourth out of six 3-person squads with 225.55 points while the "B" squad of
Juli Holt,
Jenna Hurley and
Kenya Meyer took sixth with 217.95 points.
Each diver in the team competitions performs two dives. The final 6-dive score includes two dives off each of the apparatus (1m, 3m, Platform).
The meet will wrap up on Saturday with the men's platform event and the women's 1-meter, which will begin at 10 a.m.
