Mavericks drop two to Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Mesa traveled to the Air Force Academy to take on the Number 8 Nationally Ranked Air Force Falcons in a two game series.

The Mavs looked to take down the Falcons on the road after two very close losses earlier in the season at home. In the first the Mavs kept the shots close but the Falcons would score three goals within 6 minutes to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Ben Pedigo would bring the Mavs back within striking distance with a shorthanded breakaway goal just before the end of the period.

The second period is where the Falcons created separation from the Mavs scoring 3 goals yet again to take a 6-1 lead into the 3rd. In the 3rd the Falcons expanded their lead early, but senior Eli Wilson cut it down with a great redirection off of a shot from Freshman Mason Holler on the powerplay. The Falcons would score two more goals in the third, the Mavs would finish the game on a high note when Junior Mason Ripley gave a great saucer pass to Sophomore Ryan Koch to tap in his first of the season. The Mavs fell to the Falcons 9-3 in game 1.

In game 2 the Falcons would take control early scoring two identical goals in the first period by finding loose rebounds in front to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. The Mavs would start the second with a powerplay goal from Mason Holler on a great feed from Senior Seth Kern to cut the lead in half. Later in the period Eli Wilson would win a battle in the corner and find Freshman Tristen Brooks to tie the game at 2. The Mavs would take the lead when Ben Pedigo would score his second of the weekend by bouncing a loose puck below the goal line off of the Falcons goaltender into the net. The Falcons would bounce back scoring 3 straight goals of their own to reestablish their 2 goal lead and take a 5-3 lead into the intermission.

Senior Ethan Gotchey would start the 3rd period with an absolute bomb off of a pass from Junior Evan Wagner to cut the Falcons lead in half yet again. The Mavs would tie the game shortly after as Captain Bryson Sutterby would rip one from the point on the power play. However, 4 minutes later the Falcons would take back the lead and would not look back from there scoring two more goals for a final score of 8-5. Senior Goaltender Chris McElroy kept the Mavs within striking distance all game making a whopping 67 saves in Game 2.

The Mavs have a 2 week break before they head to Arvada to take on Colorado School of Mines just before Thanksgiving.
