Battle at the Pitch

CMU returned home Saturday morning to take on a formidable Colorado State University team. The ladies had several things to work on over the week coming off a rough win in Logan last weekend. Nursing a few injuries the team fielded it's third different line up in three matches, with even more rookies stepping up and starting their first match.

CSU came out hot, pushing the home team back early in the first half. Mere minutes into the matchup, CMU was faced with an injury substitution. Minutes later an early try gave CSU the lead just 7 minutes into the matchup. However, one thing that team continuously does is fight back. Freshmen star Chloe Coop had her speed on showcase Saturday. After a strong possession, scrum and some nice back line passing it was Coop on the outside to answer back minutes later. A conversion by Rickerd evened the matchup out, 9 minutes in. After a solid attack, some nice offloads, and ball movement, it was Coop again on the far side.

With hard crashes, big runs, and huge tackles the young CMU team lead with heart and grit. Freshmen Bri Schultz made her scrumhalf debut and let with confidence. Coop again was able to dance through the opposition and speed to the try zone to give the Mavs a 12-7 lead. Senior Co Captain Carly Scheck decided to join in the fun. With a quick attack and some shifty moves of her own, she touched down for another CMU try. Coop would score one more before halftime to give CMU a commanding lead going into halftime 22-7.

Yet another injury befell the CMU squad right before halftime and CSU came out of the break again on the attack. Scoring three times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, bringing the score to 24-22 CSU favor, adjustments needed to happen. The lineup changed again which aided Coop touching down for her 4th try of the matchup.

The match continued for the final 20 minutes in this manner. One team scoring  the other responding. CMUs resiliency was enough to outlast the Rams and bring home the third win for the Mavs this season. A strong scoring performance by Coop (adding 6 tries to her 4 on the season) gave CMU the edge. It was a full team effort and every player played their part.

Final score on this battle 39-31. The Mavs enter their bye week this weekend and will complete their 12th annual Mnt. Garfield hike-a-thon.
