Women’s Soccer to head to South Dakota for single match

Grand Junction, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team find themselves playing only one match this week as they continue RMAC play with a trip up to South Dakota to take on opponent Black Hills State University. The Mavs will play the Yellow Jackets on Sunday, October 6 at 11 a.m. at Black Hills Power Sports Complex.

CMU is currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating both opponents New Mexico Highlands University and Adams State University this past weekend to start conference play 2-0. They are currently tied for first place in the conference standings.

The Mavericks' offense has seen a boost in production as of late as in their last two matches they have outscored opponents 7-0 and have recorded back-to-back shutouts.

The duo of Abby Fotheringham and Sarah Dunn are the team's current leaders in goals scored as each have totaled three goals apiece. Fotheringham leads the team with two game-winners this season as well.

Both Fotheringham and Adessa Correa would score two goals this last weekend to bolster the team who now has outscored opponents 14-7 through seven matches.

Sauvelyne Randel serves as the team leader in assists with three. Fotheringham and Carli Dare follow closely behind her with two assists each.

There have been 126 shots taken this season with 64 of them on goal. CMU is currently the conference leader in shots on goal per game with 9.14.

With the back-to-back shutouts CMU has now recorded three shutouts this season and Goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek has now totaled 13 shutouts in her career. Wieczorek has recorded seven saves this season while limiting opponents to only one goal allowed per game.

Correa and Wieczorek were this week's RMAC players of the week for defensive player of the week and goalkeeper of the week, the first time CMU has received these honors this season.

The Mavs' lone opponent this weekend, Black Hills State University, has struggled so far this season as they are currently winless through eight matches. The Yellow Jackets hold a 0-5-3 record so far this season and are 0-2 to start conference play after losing to both Colorado Christian and MSU Denver this past week. BHSU will take on Colorado School of Mines on Friday, Oct. 4, before their match with the Mavs on Sunday.

BHSU has been outscored by opponents 3-21 this year with their three goals coming courtesy of Paige Hill, Anacel Valenzuela-Acosta and Jayda Hammer who each have one goal apiece.

Hill and Valenzuela-Acosta have the team's two assists.

Sunday's match can be watched on the RMAC network with live stats to be followed on their website.
