Mavericks go 2-1 on Phoenix road trip

Phoenix, Ariz. - Colorado Mesa traveled down to Arizona for a three game road trip against Grand Canyon University and Park University - Gilbert. 

The Mavericks played the GCU Lopes in Game 1, CMU came out flat but led after the 1st period thanks to Freshman Tristen Brooks cleaning up a rebound on the power play. In the second the Lopes would tie it, but the Mavericks would take the lead back when Junior Ben Pedigo found the puck in a scrum in front of the net for his first of the season. The Lopes would score back to back goals in the third to go up 3-2.Senior Bryson Sutterby netted his first of the season tying the game. The Lopes would score on a penalty shot and defeat the Mavs 4-3.

In Game 2 the Mavs looked to bounce back giving Freshman John Hickam his first career start against the Parks Gilbert Buccaneers. The Mavericks dominated period 1 heavily outshooting the Bucs but gave up a late short handed goal giving the Bucs a  1-0 lead. In the second the Mavs would tie the game when Ben Pedigo scored his second goal of the weekend. The Bucs wasted no time as they took back the lead on a tipped shot. Brooks found the net for the fourth straight game of the season to tie the game at 2. 

Newly named captain Bryson Sutterby took over from there dangling around and firing one past on the power play to give the Mavs their first lead of the game. Sutterby then picked the puck up off a bounce on the boards to pad in his second of the game leading the Mavericks their first win of the season 4-2. 

The final game of the weekend would see the Mavericks put up 14 goals against the Buccaneers. Freshman Mason Holler and Junior Mason Ripley would both score hat tricks. Freshman Connor Hassenstab scored his first two career goals. Senior Joey Voyles, Junior Evan Wagner, and Junior Everest Samter found the net for the first time this season. Eli Wilson, Bryson Sutterby and Tristen Brooks all found the back of the net again for a final score of 14-2. 

The Mavericks went 2-1 on the weekend and look to keep the momentum as they face Colorado School of Mines for homecoming weekend, the 18th AND 19th at home.
