GRAND JUNCTION, CO.- Colorado Mesa opens the season at home hosting then #4 ranked Air Force Falcons.
The Mavericks hosted the Falcons to open up the 2024-25 season at home. The Mavericks came out fast keeping the Falcons in their own zone to begin the 1st period, but ran into penalty trouble fast. The Falcons would capitalize taking a 1-0 lead to end the 1st. However, the Mavericks would score their first goal of the season on the power play to tie the game early in 2nd with Freshman, Tristen Brooks, scoring the first of his career off a pass from Freshman Mason Holler.
The Falcons would then score three straight across the second and third period. Senior Eli Wilson would cap wrap up the scoring in game one off a face off late in the 3rd to make it 4-2. Senior goaltender Chris McElroy kept the Mavs in the game with an astonishing 43 saves. The game would end 4-2 seeing the Mavericks fall in their season opener.
In Game 2, the Mavericks scored the first goal on the powerplay again as Senior Bryson Sutterby found Freshman Mason Holler backdoor for the first goal of his Maverick career. The Falcons would tie the game shortly after to even things up into the intermission.
The Falcons would take the lead early in the 2nd, but the Mavericks would again respond. With the team's 3rd power play goal of the weekend, Tristen Brooks cleaned up a rebound in front and evened up the score. In a game of back and fourths, Brooks would score his second of the game giving momentum back to the Mavericks, while also giving them a 3-2 lead.
In the third the Falcons would score two unanswered, and the game would round out without any other pucks netted. Leading to the Falcons defeating the Mavericks 5-3.
The Mavericks fought hard against a tough team and showed promise for the season to come. CMU will head on the road for a three game road series in Arizona before hosting Colorado School of Mines for homecoming weekend on October 18th AND 19th.
