Mavs extend winning streaks with hard-fought 4-setter

Hunt's 20 kills, VanDeList's all-purpose match lead CMU past Adams State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The nation's 16th-ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks overcame third and fourth set deficits to win those sets and the match in four (25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23) over visiting Adams State University on Saturday afternoon here in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks improved to 13-3 overall and to 5-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with their fifth straight overall win and their sixth straight triumph at home.  They also knocked off the Grizzlies (4-13, 1-5 RMAC) for the ninth straight time since 2016 while improving to 8-1 at home this season.

Right side hitter Sierra Hunt once again led the Mavericks tallying 20 kills while all-America outside hitter Sydney Leffler finished with 15.

Hunt had recorded a career-high 24 in Friday's 5-set win over CSU Pueblo while Leffler tallied 20 in that match.

Sophomore middle Nicole Martin also matched her Friday night effort with ten kills as Maverick setter Sabrina VanDeList recorded 52 assists and 13 digs to register her fourth consecutive double-double.  VanDeList also added five kills, a pair of service aces and a block.

Maverick Libero Allison Waller also chipped in a match-high 19 digs while the Mavericks recorded five solo and nine total blocks while relying heavily on defensive specialists Jordan Woods, Marli Clausi, Hahni Johnson and Rhyan Mason, who combined for 20 more digs giving CMU a 72-57 advantage in that category.

ASU also had nine blocks as Nora Conway was involved in six.  Cindy Garcia led the Grizzly offensive attack with 14 kills while Anna Huggins tallied nine kills and 17 digs.  Remi Vargas also chipped in a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs for the visitors, who made the Mavericks work quite hard to pull out the win.

After dropping the second set, the Mavericks trailed by as man as six at 15-9 before rallying to tie the set at 18 on three straight Hunt kills.

They later went up 22-20 on an Erin Brown kill before the Grizzlies tied the set at 23.

VanDeList and Huggins then exchanged kills before Leffler and Stormi Tadlock put down kills to give the Mavericks a 2-1 overall lead.

The fourth set proved to go in a similar fashion as the Grizzlies were able to build at 17-13 lead.  The Mavericks then chipped away at the disadvantage before going on a 7-2 run to build a 24-22 lead.

Two plays later, the Grizzlies served the ball into the net as the Mavericks held on to the victory.

Hunt finished with five kills in the third set and six more in the fourth as she led the Mavericks out of a difficult spot in both against the feisty Grizzlies.  She also added three blocks and a service ace and hit .293 throughout the match.

The Mavericks, who are now a perfect 16-0 in the opening set of matches this season, will now go on the road for their next three matches, playing at UCCS next Friday in Colorado Springs.
