COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— After school-record setting efforts on Saturday, Colorado Mesa University jumpers
Josie Coffey and
Eddie Kurjak swept this week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors, which were announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Kurjak, a junior from Longmont, Colorado was recognized as the men's award-winner for the second time this season after he cleared a Maverick record 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2 ½ inches) to win the high jump on Saturday at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi in Golden. His mark broke the 16-year old Steinhauer Fieldhouse record and puts him in a tie for second on this year's NCAA Division II National Performance list.
It also allowed him to break the former Maverick indoor record of 2.15 meters (7-0.5) that he had matched in December.
On Friday, Kurjak also set a personal-record and another NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying mark of 7.33 meters (24-0.75) in the long jump, moving into second place on the CMU all-time indoor chart behind teammate
Justin Thompson, who won the event with a mark of 7.56 meters (24-9.75), just three centimeters off the CMU record.
Kurjak also ranks first in the RMAC and tied for ninth nationally in the triple jump this season with a season-best of 15.14 meters (49-8.25), which he had set en-route to his first RMAC Field Athlete of the Week honor on Dec. 13.
Meanwhile, Coffey, a redshirt junior from Lakewood, Colorado, cleared 1.74 meters (5-8.5) to win the women's high jump on Saturday. That effort leads the RMAC and puts her in a tie for sixth on this year's national performance list. It also allowed her to break the previous CMU record of 1.72 meters (5-7.75) which she had set in her collegiate debut in February, 2021.
Coffey, a 3-time USTFCCCA All-American and 4-time national qualifier, has now won three RMAC Field Athlete of the Week honors in her school-record setting career.
The Maverick track and field squads are in action again this Saturday, competing in the Big Red Machine Open at Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Fieldhouse in Gunnison.
