BROOMFIELD, Colo. — At the season-opening Swan Memorial at Broadlands Golf Course, the Colorado Mesa women's golf team is in the top five after Friday's first round.
The Mavericks shot a team score of 313 in the first round, led by senior Myranda Kotlowski, who shot 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 12th entering Saturday's second round.
Juniors Cassidy Phelan and Brittlynn O'Dell each shot 7-over 79 and were tied for 33rd after the opening round. Payton Panzeri shot an 81, Crystle Querol an 86 and Sadie Kelley, playing as an individual shot a 97 in the first round.
As a team, the Mavericks trail West Texas A&M, which shot a team score of 288. The Buffs' Gam Songprasert shot 6-under 66 and has a five-stroke lead on CSU Pueblo's Zoey Rodriguez. Four RMAC teams are behind West Texas A&M in the team standings, Colorado Christian, CSU Pueblo, MSU Denver and the Mavericks. The teams had planned to play two rounds on Friday in the tournament hosted by Colorado Christian, but altered the schedule and will play the second round this morning.
Kotlowski used a pair of birdies on the front nine and an eagle-3 on the 479-yard par-5 15th hole. She was 1 under par on the front and 3 over on the back in the opening round.
