CMU made an early morning trek to the Front Range as the Lady Mavs took on a formidable opponent in the Air Force Academy. The Mavs came out firing on all cylinders, beautiful offloads, support and quick ball movement was the name of the game. Co-Captain Ryleigh Blatnik touched down first 7 minutes into the matchup and Courtney Hull knocked through the first conversion of the match to make it an early 7-0 score. Ten minutes later the Mavs broke through again with Nallely Robles breaking the line and running hard. This pattern continued as the support and ball control only improved throughout the first half. More Trys from Carly Scheck, another from Blatnik, Amerie Chavez, and Sarah Penick rounded out the half. Ten minutes before half Blatnik left the match due to injury. Minutes before half Air Force knocked through a penalty kick to get on the board with their first points of the matchup. Halftime would be 38-3 in a solid CMU domination.
 
CMU started the second half much the same as the first, with an explosive and quick run by flyhalf Ellen Rickerd merely a minute into the second. However, there was another 39 minutes left in the matchup.  Three minutes into the second half, CMU had made three substitutions due to injury. These adjustments seemed to be just enough to knock CMU off the tracks and Air Force began to climb back into the matchup. 43-3 soon changed into 8, 10, 15 etc. until we had a 43-24 ball game. Amerie Chavez would touch down 14 minutes after Rickerd to give CMU their second try of the half and stop the Air Force come back. Several more CMU finishers entered the match due to injury and again AFA went on a run.
 
Although the comeback was impressive, AFA could not overcome the massive first half defficet or ever pull ahead and take the lead. CMU stayed on top of this one to pull off an upset, 53-48 Mavs.
 
The ladies get to regroup and recover as they have this weekend off. Look to see the Mavs next in action for their final regular season matchup Sunday Oct. 8^th against the University of Wyoming. This will be an extra early morning matchup, 10am is the tentative kickoff, all updates will be reflected on the CMU website, CMUMavericks.com.
