GUNNISON, Colo. — Colorado Mesa University redshirt junior Triston Charles turned in a time of 25 minutes, 36.08 seconds Saturday to place third in the men's 8,000-meter race of the Mountaineer/Cowboy Cross Country Invitational to open the season.
The Mavericks competed against two other RMAC foes, the host Western Colorado University and Fort Lewis. Western won with 18 points, followed by Fort Lewis with 54 and CMU with 67.
Redshirt sophomore Kevin DeGree was 10th in 26:01.47, with three Maverick redshirt freshmen placing in the top 30. Drexel Cox was 25th in 26:52.59, Jackson Baker was 26th in 26:55.94, running in his hometown, and Chase Brown 28th in 27:02.57.
In the women's 5,000-meter race, redshirt junior Kirstin Williams placed fourth in 18:23.57, with redshirt sophomore Kendall White eighth in 18:40.22. Megan Hodges was 15th (19:12.56), Kate Linstedt 17th (19:30.02) and Autumn McQuitty, a freshman in her first college race, was 20th (19:45.63) for the Mavericks, who scored 61 points to place third. Western Colorado scored 22 and Fort Lewis 49.
Colorado Mesa will host its annual Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede on Sept. 29 at Lincoln Park.
