Leschig claims thriller in weather-delayed Pueblo dual

Maverick tennis teams to play revised Saturday schedule following Friday rains

PUEBLO, Colo.— William Leschig won a 15-13 marathon match tie-breaker in the No. 3 singles match to lead the Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team's efforts in a Friday evening dual against Lubbock Christian University here at the Pueblo Tennis Center.  The dual, which LCU won 6-1, was originally scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning but moved indoors after rain thwarted outdoor play at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Complex.

It was the only dual to be played at the Pueblo Duals, which will continue under predicted sunny weather on Saturday.

The Maverick women were unable to play against Nebraska-Kearney and Dallas Baptist on Friday, but are slated to still play Lubbock Christian and Fort Hays State as planned on Saturday.

LCU improved to 2-0 on the young season with the win while the Mavs dropped their first team match-up of the fall.

Leschig and the Chaps' Matti Ghedin, had split the first two sets, both of which were also decided in tie-breakers.   The Maverick sophomore won the first set tie-breaker, 7-3 before Ghedin won the second, 7-2 setting up the 10-point match tie-breaker that went well past regulation with Leschig pulling out the win.

However, the Chaps won the other five singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the doubles affairs.

The Mavs did put up some good fights in the top flights, although LCU's Martins Abamu got past Philemon Jabin, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match while Kelly Giese won a pair of 7-5 sets over CMU's Diogo Manzano at No. 2.
